HACKTIVISTS claiming to be Anonymous have defaced a website belonging to the US Department of Justice (DoJ), turning it into a celebration of the life of internet activist Aaron Swartz. This is the latest in a flurry of activity designed to raise awareness of Swartz’s passing and his beliefs, and follows…
Aaron Swartz, the Internet political activist who co-wrote the initial specification for RSS, has committed suicide, a relative told CNN Saturday. He was 26.

“Great minds carry heavy burdens,” wrote one user on Reddit, a popular social media website that Swartz helped develop and popularize following a merger in 2006.
Swartz also co-founded Demand Progress, a political action group that campaigns against Internet censorship.
A young prodigy, his passion pushed limits and landed him in legal troubles in recent years.
In 2011, he was arrested in Boston for alleged computer fraud and illegally obtaining documents from protected computers. He was later indicted from an incident in which he allegedly stole millions of online documents from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He pleaded not guilty in September, according to MIT’s “The Tech” newspaper.
Two years earlier, the FBI investigated him after he released millions of U.S. federal court documents online. No charges were filed in that case.
Swartz, who completed a fellowship at Harvard’s Ethics Center Lab on Institutional Corruption, frequently blogged about his life, success and personal struggles. In some instances, he wrote about death.
“There is a moment, immediately before life becomes no longer worth living, when the world appears to slow down and all its myriad details suddenly become brightly, achingly apparent,” he wrote in a 2007 post entitled “A Moment Before Dying.”
YouTube says it has found the music industry with their hands in the cookie jar
(Tom’s Guide)The video service deleted more than 2 billion fake video views in the channels of Universal, Sony, and RCA, according to Daily Dot. The decision apparently was made when YouTube found out that the companies were using view building services hired from sites such as Fiverr to create video views that never existed.

Sony/BMG’s was hit the hardest with views dropping from a total of more than 850 million to just 2.3 million. RCA declined by 159 million views to a total of 120 million. Universal lost more than 1 billion views and now stands below 6 billion.
Google confirmed that the companies violated its terms of services, which prohibits users from artificially inflating video views. Google noted that the view stripping was “an enforcement of [the company's] viewcount policy”.
Services that promise the perception of greater user exposure have become commonplace on the web. There are plenty of sites such as YouLikeHits, which allow users to increase the number of Facebook likes and Twitter followers. The tradition goes back to the news aggregation service Digg, which created services that would sell “diggs” to vote Internet content to the front page.

You have NO rights when it comes to social media. Now repeat that 3 times! Yep, its true. Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users’ photographs without payment or notification.
The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.
Under this new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world’s largest stock photo agency.
“It’s asking people to agree to unspecified future commercial use of their photos,” says Kurt Opsahl, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “That makes it challenging for someone to give informed consent to that deal.”
This means any company can write a check to Facebook to license photos taken at its place of business and use them on its Web site, in TV ads, in glossy brochures, and so on — without paying any money to the Instagram user who took the photo. The language would include not only photos of business, resorts, but also images of young children, couples, pets….you get the picture.
Instagrammers react:
“The end of my Instagram account,” said Tumblr user Lee Djinn. “Deleting IG on 31 December 2012.”
“They [Instagram] inserted language giving them the rights to sell your photos for use in advertisements without notifying or paying you, or getting your permission,” complained Tumblr user Kenny Vee. “And there’s no opt out other than to delete your account by January 16th.”
“Alright, Instagram, nice to have known you! Bye, bye! Not angry, because you’re about to sell the pictures of users, but angry about that you don’t even ask,” said Peter Burger.
“What does Instagram now having the right to sell OUR photos have to do with safety or with avoiding spam? Absolutely nothing,” said another Tumblr user, reacting to the changes.
Ironically, Instagram’s controversial new policies are a direct result of Facebook’s recently revised terms that removed user voting on site policies.
What are your thoughts on this new policy? Leave in comments below.
A new video captures the giant asteroid 4179 Toutatis zipping through space on its flyby of Earth earlier this week, according to a NASA report.
The asteroid Toutatis video, which is about 40 seconds long, combines 64 radar images taken Wednesday and Thursday (Dec. 12 and 13) by NASA’s Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, Calif. On those days, Toutatis was about 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers) from Earth, or about 18 times farther away than the moon is.
The images captured have been turned into a video of the asteroid’s trip for your viewing pleasure.

While Toutatis is listed as a potential threat to Earth, it is unlikely to collide with the Third Rock from the Sun any time in the next four centuries. It is possible that this three-mile-wide asteroid could crash into Earth sometime in the distant future.

Early Friday afternoon, the Space Shuttle Endeavourlanded at Los Angeles International Airport, completing one final flight on its way to a permanent display at the California Science Center.

The world famous Endeavour rocketed beyond our earth’s orbit 25 times.
According to the Los Angeles County office of emergency management a crowd of about 5,000 gathered on a bluff overlooking the airport to watch Endeavour’s low-altitude flyover.
Endeavour will remain at LAX until Oct. 12, when it begins its two-day parade across Los Angeles before it arrives at its new home.
Millions of people followed along as it flew over several cities across the southern U.S.; tweets hashtagged #SpotTheShuttle provided a real-time trace of its journey.
Space Shuttle Endeavour (Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-105) is one of the retired orbiters of the Space Shuttle program of NASA, the space agency of the United States.[1]Endeavour was the fifth and final spaceworthy NASA space shuttle to be built, constructed as a replacement for Challenger. Endeavour first flew in May 1992 on mission STS-49 and its last mission STS-134 was in May 2011.[2][3] The STS-134 mission was originally planned as the final mission of the Space Shuttle program,[4] but with authorization of the STS-135 mission, Atlantis became the last Space Shuttle to fly.
The United States Congress authorized the construction of Endeavour in 1987 to replace Challenger, which was lost in the STS-51-L launch accident in 1986. Structural spares built during the construction of Discovery and Atlantis, two of the previous shuttles, were used in its assembly. NASA chose to build Endeavour from spares rather than refitting Enterprise or accepting a Rockwell International proposal to build two shuttles for the price of one of the original shuttles, on cost grounds.
The orbiter is named after the British HMS Endeavour, the ship which took Captain James Cook on his first voyage of discovery (1768–1771).[5] This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, rather than the American English (“Endeavor”). This has caused confusion, most notably when NASA themselves misspelled a sign on the launch pad in 2007.[6] The name also honored Endeavour, the Command Module of Apollo 15, itself also named after Cook’s ship.
Endeavour was named through a national competition involving students in elementary and secondary schools. Entries included an essay about the name, the story behind it and why it was appropriate for a NASA shuttle, and the project that supported the name. Endeavour was the most popular entry, accounting for almost one-third of the state-level winners. The national winners were Senatobia Middle School in Senatobia, Mississippi, in the elementary division and Tallulah Falls School in Tallulah Falls, Georgia, in the upper school division. They were honored at several ceremonies in Washington, D.C., including a White House ceremony where then-President George H. W. Bush presented awards to each school.[7]
After almost eight years in development, Black Mesa — formerly known as Black Mesa: Source ….is finally here! Developers utilized the source engine as a Half-Life 2 total conversion in the remake of Valve Software’s original Half-Life.
The stated goal per the developers was to recreate the video game using more advanced capabilities of the Source engine.
Riddle me this — Are you no more than just a piece in their Games.??
Credit: Black Mesa Source
Black Mesa reintroduces the player as Doctor Gordon Freeman, along with the original cast of memorable characters and environments as provided by Valve.
Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source didn’t fully live up to the potential of a Source engine port of Half-Life, so they fully reconstruct the Half-Life universe.
The newly upgraded version of Half-Life isn’t yet available through Steam, but the developer’s website has multiple options for download and is available at no cost. The games soundtrack is also available for free.
To partake in the festivities of the midnight release, users will have to install Steam as well as the Source SDK Base 2007 which is also free.
According to Wikipedia in its eight years in development, Black Mesa has been featured in several video game publications and received direct attention from the software developer.
Happy “Black Mesa” Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!!!
Well, it’s been a long time coming. Tomorrow, Apple is expected to finally announce the next iPhone. Whether it’s going to be named the iPhone 5 or “the new iPhone,” have a bigger screen, or come with seven arms sticking out of it, we’ve sifted (and sometimes trudged) through months and months of rumors that will either be confirmed or done away with come tomorrow. As archivers of the iPhone rumor mill, it has been entertaining, but we’re looking forward to a brief moment of peace until a whole new batch of rumors comes out for the next iteration. Until then, remember to join us during our live blog tomorrow as the iPhone specs are unveiled and the bets get settled. (Who put $5 on NFC, anyone, anyone?)
After unveiling a marginally improved iPhone 4S in 2011 instead of a radically different iPhone 5, Apple has returned to its development labs to cook up (no pun intended) the next iteration of its popular phone. In 2012, we’re fairly certain that the real iPhone 5 will roll out of Apple’s gates and that the device should be a bigger leap forward than the 4S was.
That’s why after taking some time off at the end of last year, we’ve resurrected CNET’s iPhone 5 rumor roundup to cover the new tidbits from 2012. So join us again in watching the rumor mill churn. We’ll add to it until we get the real thing; please let us know if we’ve left any gossip out.
September 10, 2012 Those previously mentioned plugs may be the size of Micro-USB
Not satisfied with just posting pictures of the supposedly new iPhone 5 plugs, Nowhereelse is now reporting that these updated dock connectors may be the same size as a Micro-USB port. In addition to the new phone sporting the smaller port, other future devices, like the next iPad, will include it too.
September 8, 2012 New pictures, new plugs
Leaked images from French blog Nowhereelse suggest that the new iPhone skipped out on the Rogaine and got new plugs (har har!). The picture is consistent with ongoing rumors that the new handset will do away with the 30-pin dock and sport a smaller port instead.
September 7, 2012 Again with the 4G LTE speculation The Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter,” claims that the new iPhone will be equipped with 4G LTE capabilities. Though the iPhone 4S was expected to come with the technology, it sported the 3G-ish technology HSPA+ instead. The third-generation iPad, however, debuted with 4G LTE five months after the 4S, when it was offered in different carrier models.
The new iPhone will debut with the same price as always 9to5Mac reported that the iPhone 5 may be initially offered at the same price as the iPhone 4S when it debuted. According to a “parts code matrix” that the publication posted, the device will come with the familiar $199 to $399 price tag. So if you’re worried that you’ll have to pay more for the new iteration, you can relax…for now.
More evidence corroborates Sept. 21 release date
Rumors about a September 21 release date for the iPhone 5 receive additional support from multiple outlets, including GottaBeMobile and Geeky Gadgets. MacRumors reported that FedEx is expecting a “surge volume” from September 21 to 24, piling onto the projected-date-rumors mountain as well.
September 5, 2012 Another day, another photo leak
An online repair site, iResQ, published a leaked photo of the purported iPhone 5 next to the iPhone 4S. The pictures show a thinner device, one without the look of a back plate seen on previous models. The picture is consistent with ongoing rumors that the new iPhone will be slimmer.
That dock adapter you’re going to have to buy will probably be from Apple
As rumors of a smaller iPhone dock swirl around, iLounge reported that Apple has kept third-party accessory makers in the dark about its specs, essentially calling dibs on an adapter that users can buy to accommodate their old chargers with the new iPhone. This is similar to Apple’s MagSafe adapter, which costs $9.99, and modifies previous-generation chargers to work with the company’s updated line of notebooks.
It’ll probably sell like hotcakes
To no one’s surprise, the new iPhone is expected to sell well — like, really well. An analyst from Piper Jaffray, Gene Munster, estimates that within its first week of release, 6 million to 10 million units will be sold. For the full month of September, 26 million units are projected to sell. Another analyst from JPMorgan, Mark Moskowitz, speculates that 168 million iPhones will be sold in fiscal 2013, a bump up from its previous estimate of 147.4 million.
September 4, 2012 It’s official: Apple’s holding an event September 12
Apple sent out its official invitations today for a previously speculated-about September 12 event. The event will start at 10 a.m. PT in San Francisco. The invitation includes the words, “It’s almost here,” followed by a shadowy number “5″ underneath (which bodes well for the rumored “iPhone 5″ name, instead of “new iPhone”). Though no further details have been released, additional rumors surmise that the device itself will go on sale nine days after the event, on September 21.
September 2, 2012 iPhone 5 mock-ups hit IFA
While there were plenty of real products at the IFA trade show in Berlin, there were also mockups of ones that did not exist — including one for an iPhone 5. Following many of the rumored specs, the device was taller, with a headphone jack on the bottom, and a two-toned back. Shortly after photos and videos of that device turned up from the show, a video of a purported prototype version went up on YouTube (below).
August 31, 2012 If the new iPhone is LTE enabled, Verizon will be a hit
Speculation that the next iPhone will have LTE capabilities is nothing new, but an investor note from Jefferies & Co. reports that if this rumor holds true, it could be a big win for Verizon. The analyst, Thomas Seitz, said that because Verizon’s LTE network reaches more people in more markets than AT&T’s, Big Red may lead in sales when it comes to the iPhone 5.
More photos from France
Not satisfied with releasing just one set of pictures of the alleged new iPhone, Nowhereelse is at it again with more shots of the iPhone 5 — this time from the side. Though the photos don’t tell us much, the images are consistent with ongoing rumors that the new device will be taller and have a bigger display.
