Jazz lovers unite in an Intimate Concert to Benefit the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund
Dr. Ana Isabel Ordonez, Ruby Flower Records, Christopher Kennedy Lawford and Cheryl Wills joins with The Dizzy Gillespie/Englewood to Fundraiser for Jazz Musicians worldwide in New York, October 16th at the incarnation of the Historic Cotton Club in New York.
LOS ANGELES, CA–(EPR – August 10, 2012) The ritzy fundraiser supports the “Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund” which underwrites the costs of hospitalization, diagnostic tests, and a full range of surgical and medical care for jazz musicians who are uninsured and in distress. Since its formation, the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund-Englewood Hospital has provided over $5 million in medical services, the Fund is 100% donor supported.
Dizzy Gillespie was one of the most influential figures in many American musical forms, having first revolutionized jazz in the 40s by being one of the acknowledged inventors of bebop; and then again in the decades that followed when he championed the rich rhythms of Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, and Brazilian music that, to a large extent, still dominate jazz to this very day. Born October 21, 1917, Cheraw, South Carolina, John Birks Gillespie, Dizzy moved to Philadelphia with his family at age 18 and joined Frankie Fairfax’s band before moving on to New York City and Teddy Hill’s big band in 1937.
Later he played with all the greats—Ella Fitzgerald. Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Earl Hines, and Billie Holliday. Gillespie was the first jazz artist to be sent abroad under the auspices of the United States government, spreading American goodwill and good music around the world. John Birks Gillespie died on January 6, 1993 in Englewood, New Jersey.
Actor, writer and activist in the substance abuse recovery movement, Christopher Kennedy Lawford will host the illustrious event.
Christopher spent 20 years in the film and television industries as an actor, lawyer, executive and producer. He is the author of two New York Times bestselling books, Symptoms of Withdrawal: A Memoir of Snapshots and Redemption (2005) and Moments of Clarity (2009). He has also published Healing Hepatitis C (2009) and his newest work, Recover to Live, Kick Any habit, Manage Any Addiction, is forthcoming. In recovery for more than 26 years from drug addiction, Mr. Lawford campaigns tirelessly on behalf of the recovery community in both the public and private sectors. He presently works with the United Nations, the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse, the White House Office on Drug Control Policy and the World Health Organization. He also consults with Fortune 500 companies and numerous non-profit groups, speaking around the world on issues related to addiction, mental health and Hepatitis C. In 2009, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Mr. Lawford to the California Public Health Advisory Committee. In 2011, Mr. Lawford was named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime to promote activities supporting drug treatment, care and recovery. He also serves as National Advocacy Consultant for Caron Treatment Centers. Mr. Lawford holds a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University, a Juris Doctorate from Boston College Law School and a Masters Certification in Clinical Psychology from Harvard Medical School where he held an academic appointment as a Lecturer in Psychiatry. Mr Lawford will be accompanied by NY1 Anchor Woman , Cheryl Wills. Mrs Wills is an award-winning television personality for Time Warner Cable’s flagship national news network, New York 1 News, based in New York City. She has been with the news channel since its launch in 1992 and the journalist is also the author of Die Free: A Heroic Family Tale which traces her great-great-great grandfather Sandy Wills’ courageous service in the Civil War as a member of the United States Colored Troops. On March 25, 2011, Cheryl Wills made history as the first journalist invited to speak inside the United Nations General Assembly Hall for the International Remembrance of Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Cheryl is also a blogger for the internationally renowned The Huffington Post and she contributes to Essence.com. A nationally recognized public speaker, Cheryl has been tapped to host and speak events at The Essence Music Festival, McDonald’s Gospel Fest, The Congressional Black Caucus and The World Summit of Mayors in Senegal West Africa. As a television journalist, Cheryl Wills has been a reliable guide through everything from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, to moderating televised discussions about the presidency of Barack Obama. She has received numerous awards for her work including New York Press Club and AP Awards, the YMCA National Black Achievers in Industry Award. In 2010, McDonald’s honored Wills as a broadcasting legend during a regional ad campaign. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from New York College of Health Professions in May of 2005. Her acting work has included playing herself in television shows like NBC’s Law & Order SVU and major motion pictures such as Freedomland, starring Samuel Jackson, and The Brave One, with Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard. Wills is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and is the V.P. of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, an active member of The Women’s Forum of New York, The Links, Incorporated, The Inner Circle of City Hall Journalists, The New York Press Club, and The Screen Actors Guild. Cheryl is also proud to be a The Founding Commander of the New York Chapter of the “Sons & Daughters of the United States Colored Troops”.
Dr. Ana Isabel Ordonez, who is a member of the Jazz Journalists Association, a writer, editor, independent filmmaker, poet, music/art promoter, publisher and producer. Ordonez was educated in Europe and is an accomplished scientist who has lectured and cooperated in miscellaneous capacities throughout South America, Europe, Africa, East-Europe, Japan, China and New Zealand. Ana Isabel is a Doctor of Sciences in Animal Biology and holds three post doctorates. Ordonez has been a recipient of multiple grants : The Dutch Embassy Luxembourg, The American Embassy Luxembourg and Ville de Dudelange for her film projects on film Noir and Jazz, in 2009 by Augusta Savage Gallery, University of Massachusetts for her film project on the Shoah. Since before this country’s inception, black people have struggled against deeply ingrained race based expressions of power, privilege and exclusion. After post Civil War reconstruction was defeated in 1877 and the era of Jim Crow was ushered in during the mid 20th century, America’s elite universities and well respected ‘scientists’ advanced claims of biological evidence connecting black physical features to inferior intelligence and predisposition to criminal behavior. This ‘evidence’ further fueled the national hysteria about a growing black population and offered justification for criminalizing black men.

Today, there is a more nuanced but equally damaging perception of poor black people that has resulted in a ‘cradle to prison’ superhighway, which we call a network of legislation, policy, practice and structural racism that has fostered blacks being incarcerated at unconscionable levels at increasingly younger ages for minor acts. It is no wonder then that blacks believe the term ‘racial justice’ is an oxymoron.
After decades of prison construction and record incarceration rates, proponents of punishment continue to argue that serving time is an effective tool to combat crime. The incarceration epidemic has been buttressed by misinformation and exaggeration from high profile politicians, psychologists and criminologists. It has been reinforced by sensational news accounts that daily parade black men…young and not so young in handcuffs and orange prison uniforms in front of the public.
Does the name John Dilulio ring a bell? Dilulio is a conservative writer and former Bush aide who worked in the White House. He greatly contributed to the incarceration frenzy by introducing the pejorative political catch phrase, “super predator,” to describe these black men. To incite fear, those who advocate for harsher penalties for law violators have used the term relentlessly, which in turn provides public support for a flawed justice system.
The implications of the “cradle to prison” for our children, families and communities are far reaching and deserving of attention. For example, while the majority of blacks incarcerated are men, black women have also felt the brunt of these practices. Black women are 18 times more likely to be incarcerated for similar offenses than are their white counterparts. Since women are usually the primary caretakers, incarceration has a particularly devastating effect on their children, extended family and spouses.
Regrettably, the juvenile justice system is no better. At the beginning of the 20th century, the founders of the juvenile court had great aspirations for the treatment of children and their families; more than a century later, their aspirations have not been realized.
As a result of the coexistence of national anti drug efforts and “zero tolerance” campaigns…which reach into the school’s and begin criminalizing black children at a young age, more youth of color are being introduced to the juvenile justice system than ever before. The striking racial disparities within the juvenile system corrode the notion of justice, particularly for youth who experience injustice firsthand.
The “Correcting the System of Unequal Justice” talk show represents a realization that there is a multi-headed, multi tentacle monster out there devouring blacks who live in certain neighborhoods. Incarceration is just one aspect of this menace, but it is an overwhelming damaging aspect. Our job on this new talk show will be to educate…to work and achieve fairness and equity. We will be sounding the alarm about the unjust criminal justice system and demand that our leaders and those in power act now to halt this destructive, unfair treatment of our brothers and sisters….especially our children.

Sarah Lancaster had a healthy baby boy, Oliver Michael Jacobs on June 29th, weighing in at 8 lbs., 7 oz. The Chuck star, 31, wed attorney Matthew Jacobs earlier this year in Southern California. “We feel so fortunate for every minute we get to spend with our healthy and happy baby,” the couple told PEOPLE mag.
