Three Marines have been killed at a US marine base in Virginia after a suspected gunman opened fire on two others before killing himself.

FILE: U.S. Marines practice their ceremonial flag drills in front of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.

The first victim was shot at Marine Base Quantico at about 11pm local time on Thursday, leading to a standoff between authorities and the suspect, said base spokesman Lt Agustin Solivan.

The Associated Press reported that authorities entered the barracks where the suspect had barricaded himself after the first victim was shot.

Upon entering the authorities found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, along with a second victim. Solivan could not say what prompted authorities to enter the barracks.

The base lockdown was lifted just before 3 a.m. on Friday.

This is a developing story.

The shootings comes days after seven U.S. Marines were killed in a mortar explosion at an Army munitions depot in Nevada during a live-fire training exercise.

In that incident on Monday, a lightweight mortar exploded prematurely in its firing tube, killing the Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, who had been undergoing mountain warfare training, and wounding eight other service members.

It prompted the Marines to order a blanket suspension of the use of 60mm mortars pending a review.

Watch CBS 46 Atlanta tomorrow night as Ronald Hatcher discusses the maltreatment of disabled youth in Fulton County Schools and the death of his son Aaron Hatcher

Special needs teacher Katherine Dorn Durden still free to teach at Roswell High school despite allegations and overwhelming evidence that abuse by her led to young Hatcher’s death.

EPRLog (Press Release)Nov 13, 2012Ronald Hatcher and his wife Arthelia, filed a $10.5million lawsuit against Fulton county schools in early 2011 claiming teachers ‘repeatedly abused’ their 18-year-old special needs child which eventually led to his death.

Aaron Hatcher, who had muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy, could not speak or walk. His father Ronald, from Atlanta, Georgia, claims Roswell High School teacher Katherine Dorn Durden forced the teen to wear a homemade neck brace, causing physical and mental suffering.

The father’s attorney, Trey Sauls, said the tightened brace obstructed Aaron’s breathing and contributed to his death.

The Courthouse News Service details (http://www.courthousenews.com/2012/03/05/44396.htm) the lawsuit’s account of the alleged abuse.

‘[The teacher] fastened this neck brace not for any medical reason, but to force his neck in a position to look at her,’ Mr Sauls told WSBTV.com.

‘In turning his head in this position, it restricted his airway,’ he added. ‘In essence, it stopped him from breathing.’

Mr Hatcher said he notified school officials and the school board about the use of the unapproved neck brace but the teacher continued to force him to wear it.

‘I wanted it to stop. I even said in my email, “If you don’t stop this, he’s going to die.” They did nothing,’ he added.

Mr Hatcher said Aaron had breathing difficulties because of the restraint, which led to several emergency room trips. On March 19, after being released from hospital, the teen died at home.

According to the lawsuit, which names 24 defendants including the school district, Aaron also suffered abuse at Hopewell Middle School from 2005 to 2007. The allegations include assault and battery, false imprisonment, negligent hiring, negligent supervision, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil rights violations.

It’s been almost 1 year since Fulton county DA Paul Howard took over the case and many are upset because there still has yet to be an arrest or firing for that matter, despite the overwhelming evidence.

Hatcher spoke with CBS Atlanta 46 anchor Jeff Chirico today and discussed the maltreatment of disabled youth in Fulton County Schools, his son, the undeniable evidence and how his family is coping with young Aarons death.

The complete interview airs tomorrow night at 11pm EST on CBS Atlanta - channel 46.

Dharun Ravi sentenced to jail in Rutgers webcam case

Published by EOTM News Editor on May 21st, 2012 - in Breaking News, Crime and Punishment, Trending

(LA Times) A judge Monday sentenced a former Rutgers University student, Dharun Ravi, to 30 days in jail for spying on his gay roommate who later committed suicide, rejecting defense arguments that he did not deserve time behind bars but disappointing prosecutors who portrayed him as insensitive and driven by anti-gay bias.

Dharun Ravi arrives at court for his sentencing hearing in New Brunswick, N.J. (Mel Evans / Associated Press / May 21, 2012)

Ravi, who is now 20, had faced 10 years in prison after being convicted last March of invasion of privacy, witness tampering, tampering of evidence, and the hate crime of bias intimidation. He was also sentenced to 300 hours of community service.

The jury had concluded that Ravi had targeted his roommate, Tyler Clementi, because Clementi was gay, and the bias-crime status virtually guaranteed he would get some prison time.

Clementi, 18, threw himself from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, shortly after learning that Ravi had secretly videotaped him in their room with a male date.

While Ravi never was accused of causing Clementi’s death, the circumstances sparked a national debate on bullying and other pressures facing gay youths. During the trial, prosecutors sought to portray Ravi as a homophobic, self-satisfied college freshman who took pleasure in humiliating his shy, sensitive roommate.

Judge Glenn Berman addressed Ravi before announcing his sentence, saying: “Nothing I say is intended in any way to disparage you or demean you. I don’t even know you.”

“But I heard this jury say ‘guilty’ 288 times — 24 questions, 12 jurors — that’s the multiplication. And I haven’t heard you apologize once,” he said as Ravi sat silently, his chin often resting on his fist. “You cannot expunge the conduct or the pain you caused.”

He noted that Ravi has no prior record and that it was unlikely he would commit another offense. He also said he did not think Ravi was anti-gay.

“I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi … but I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity,” Berman said. Ravi’s mother sobbed in the courtroom as the sentence was read, and Clementi’s parents sat quietly.

Ravi, sitting in a dark suit and tie, sat quietly with his eyes downcast, as he had throughout the morning as Clementi’s parents, brother, and prosecutors appealed for prison time, rejecting arguments that as a first-time offender, Ravi should be spared incarcerations.

“All of the defendant’s actions … were planned, were purposeful, and were malicious,” prosecutor Julia McClure said, describing Ravi as an arrogant attention-seeker and dismissing the defense claim that Ravi meant no harm when he secretly filmed Clementi. It “defies logic and common sense,” she said.

“The jury’s verdict gave some measure of justice … but justice can only be fully realized by respecting and enforcing the law and punishing this defendant for his conduct, his criminal acts,” she said.

Defense attorney Steve Altman read a statement to Berman after Clementi’s mother, father, brother and a man secretly filmed with Clementi demanded prison time for Ravi.

Altman said he had come before the packed courtroom with an anxiety “1,000-fold more than what I’ve ever experienced before” because he knew he needed to persuade Berman to keep Ravi out of jail. “I know that’s climbing a mountain,” he said, but he repeated his argument that the case had been overshadowed by Clementi’s suicide even though Ravi was not charged in his death.

“This isn’t about a simple invasion of privacy,” he said. “This case is being tried and it’s being treated and exists today as if it’s a murder case.” Even the victim impact statements “are replete with suggestions … that Dharun has some responsibility, some role in that terrible, terrible choice of Tyler’s.”

As he spoke, Ravi, dressed in a dark suit, sat quietly, his eyes downcast. Those in the packed courtroom included more than a dozen family members, including his father, Ravi Pazhani, who said his son had been “dragged through the mud” and demonized for Clementi’s suicide even though he said he had no part in it. “Dharun is punished for what happened after the incident,” he said, referring to Clementi’s death.

Pazhani described his son as a “passive child” and said it was impossible that he could have become the arrogant bully that prosecutors portrayed during his first year in Rutgers. “We are not a homophobic family. Dharun was not raised to hate gays,” said Pazhani, who also alluded to his family’s Indian heritage.

“As an American, I may look different, have a different skin color, may speak differently from most,” he said in heavily accented English. “But believe me, I am a parent first.” Pazhani then went on to pay tribute to Tyler Clementi, referring to his talents as a violinist and lamenting his early death.

“Rest in peace, Tyler, you will always be in our thoughts and prayers,” he said before appealing to Berman to spare his son jail time.

Ravi, who had been stoic through the various statements, broke down in tears when his mother, Sabitha Ravi, then took a seat beside him at the defense table and described between sobs how the case had devastated the family and how she felt her son had been wrongly characterized.

“Dharun’s dreams are shattered and he has been living in hell for the past 20 months,” she cried.

Just In via Police Report:Trayvon Martin’s shooting was ‘avoidable’

Autopsy: Trayvon Martin tested positive for marijuana; George Zimmerman shot him in heart at close range —

According to a police report by Standford, Florida PD, Trayvon Martin’s fatal encounter with George Zimmerman was avoidable.

The report came nearly a month before a special prosecutor brought second-degree-murder charges against Zimmerman, 28, in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon. He has pleaded not guilty and said he acted in self-defense.

Getty Images

“The encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman, if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement, or conversely, if he had identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and initiated dialog in an effort to dispel each party’s concern,” the report says. “There is no indication that Trayvon Martin was involved in any criminal activity at the time of the encounter.”

The report says a single bullet perforated Trayvon’s heart.

A photograph released by Florida authorities shows blood on the head of George Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin during a confrontation in Sanford. Zimmerman says it was self-defense.

Witness accounts in the police reports describe the confrontation. One witness reported seeing Trayvon on top of Zimmerman, hitting him in a physical struggle.

According to a report by Christopher Serino of the Sanford Police Department, a witness said she heard “a commotion, which sounded to her like arguing.” She looked out from her bedroom window and saw two men on the ground.

“She then heard someone yell ‘help, help,’ ” the report said. “She then heard a ‘pop’ noise and then saw the decedent laying on the ground, motionless, and the other male, who she described as ‘larger’ and ‘Hispanic looking,’ standing over the decedent.”

Other police investigative reports said that Trayvon had been staying in the gated residential complex for a week before the shooting and that he had been sent to the home of a friend by his father after the teen had been suspended from school for 10 days for marijuana possession. A toxicology report on his body found a small amount of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, in his blood.

A police report concluded that at the time he was confronted by Zimmerman, Trayvon “was in fact generally running in the direction of where he was staying as a guest in the neighborhood.”

Zimmerman had reported “suspicious persons, all young black males” to police on three previous occasions in 2011, the reports said.

“According to record checks, all of Zimmerman’s suspicious person calls while residing in the Retreat neighborhood have identified Black males as the subjects,” the report said.

The autopsy, conducted by the medical examiner in Volusia County, Fla., also showed that 17-year-old Martin had one small abrasion on his left ring finger below the knuckle, according to the news report. The report could back the account of George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain accused of killing Martin, who has said he fired into Martin’s chest in self-defense as the youth was straddling and pummeling him.

A spokesman for Volusia County, Fla., told Fox News the report was not made public and was leaked by someone other than the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office. He noted attorneys for both Zimmerman and Martin had copies of it. He said the report will not be released while an active investigation of the Feb. 26 shooting remains underway.Dr. Michael Baden, the former New York City medical examiner, said “intermediate” in such cases is defined as the muzzle of the gun being one to 18 inches away from the entry point when fired.

“If the muzzle is right against the skin, that’s a contact wound,” Baden said. Anything beyond 18 inches is considered “distant” range in coroner’s parlance, Baden said.

The autopsy results surface as court records indicate that Zimmerman sustained multiple injuries. Zimmerman, who is claiming self-defense in the fatal shooting on Feb. 26, had a pair of black eyes, a fractured nose and two cuts to the back of his head, according to a medical report prepared by his personal physician.

Some legal experts say the report on Zimmerman’s injuries, first reviewed by ABC News, may bolster his claim that he shot Martin in self-defense.

Lil Boosie acquitted of murder

Published by EOTM News Editor on May 12th, 2012 - in Breaking News, Crime and Punishment, Trending

Jurors acquitted rapper Torrence “Lil Boosie” Hatch on Friday after only one hour of deliberation in the 2009 slaying of a man gunned down in his home.

Getty Images

Hatch, who stood quietly, bowed his head and pumped his fist when he heard the decision from the jury.

“You’ve been found not guilty. You stuck your fist up in the air and I can’t exactly say that I blame you,” the judge said.

Prosecutors contend Hatch hired Michael “Marlo Mike” Louding to kill 35-year-old Terry Boyd, who was shot to death through a window while he was inside his home. Boyd’s sister, Rochelle Wagner, is the mother of Hatch’s 5-year-old daughter. She left the court crying after hearing the verdict and did not speak with reporters.

Hatch, 29, is currently serving an eight-year prison term on separate drug charges. Had he been convicted in Boyd’s slaying, he would have faced life in prison.

“I think he has a long life and an amazing career ahead of him now,” said Martin Regan, another attorney.

Following the verdict, more than 100 people celebrated in a small park in front of the courthouse, laughing, slapping hands and dancing around. When Hatch’s team of defense attorneys appeared, the crowd loudly chanted “Boosie, Boosie, Boosie.” When the attorneys began to descend the court house’s steps, some in the crowd shrieked and mobbed them, congratulating them on doing a good job.

Black Jesus Pendant & Necklace

“The quick verdict showed that they should never have charged him,” Williams said. “We didn’t call a single witness because every single witness they called, even the police officers, did not say anything connecting Torrence to this.”

During the trial, jurors heard tracks recorded by Hatch that make reference to someone named Marlo and that prosecutors say include lyrics about death that indicated Hatch’s intent to kill Boyd.

The USA Today contributed to this report.
