James Gandolfini, the actor who most famously portrayed Tony Soprano on the series “The Sopranos,” has died in Italy at age 51, according to his managers and HBO, which broadcast “The Sopranos.”

“It is with immense sorrow that we report our client James Gandolfini passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy,” said his managers, Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders. “Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving.”

HBO said in a prepared statement, “We’re all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us.”

Gandolfini and his wife Deborah recently became parents of a baby girl, Liliana Ruth Gandolfini, on Oct. 10, 2012, according to USA Today. He also had a son, Michael, with his former wife, Marcy Wudarski, the paper reported.

News of his death was first reported Tuesday evening by the website BuzzFeed, for which Hastings also wrote.

“We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone,” Ben Smith, BuzzFeed editor in chief, said in a statement posted online shortly before 7 p.m.

“Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians. He wrote stories that would otherwise have gone unwritten, and without him there are great stories that will go untold.

“Michael was also a wonderful, generous colleague, a joy to work with and a lover of corgis — especially his Bobby Sneakers,” Smith continued. “Our thoughts are with Elise and the rest of his family and we are going to miss him.”

Hastings, a Vermont native, was a 1998 graduate of Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington.

His reporting on Gen. Stanley McChrystal and the subsequent story in June 2010 led to the commander’s resignation after he was quoted ridiculing President Obama, Vice President Biden and other administration officials. The story was titled “The Runaway General” and resulted from the considerable access to McChrystal and others that Hastings was granted.

“You never know how a story will be received,” Hastings told the Burlington Free Press.
Hastings also published “I Lost My Love in Baghdad,” in 2010, telling the story of being a young war correspondent whose girlfriend dies in Iraq.

The piece won numerous awards.

Hastings was a regular contributor to Gentlemen’s Quarterly and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine.    He was also a journalist for Newsweek magazine.

The Hall of Fame defensive end credited with terming the word sack for how he knocked down quarterbacks.

The Washington Redskins said that Jones died of natural causes at his home in Southern California on Monday night.

Washington GM Bruce Allen called Jones “a giant” on and off the field, and he’s right about that. The guy was as good an interview and story teller as he was a football player, an ambassador who helped popularize the game.

But he was more than that. He was a trailblazer. He drew our attention to a play that we appreciated but never recognized. He reportedly was the first to practice the head-slap, too, a tactic that helped him get past offensive linemen and engulf the quarterback.
USA TODAY Sports Weekly

“He redefined the game,” said St. Louis Rams executive vice president and COO Kevin Demoff.

Jones also had several small acting roles both during and after his playing career. He was a guest star on a handful of television shows – including episodes of “Bewitched,” ”The Brady Bunch” and “The Odd Couple” – and appeared in the 1978 Warren Beatty film “Heaven Can Wait.”

Most recently, Jones was the CEO of his own foundation, which he began in 1997. He also made several trips to visit troops on active duty in the Middle East.

Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine Chancellor on “The Young and the Restless,” has died, she was 84. Her death was confirmed by her son, actor Corbin Bernsen, on his Twitter account.

“Mom passed this morning,” Bernsen posted. “She was in peace and without fear.”

“Jeanne was the matriarch of the show in every sense of the word,” said Lauralee Bell, Christine/Cricket on “The Young and the Restless” and William Bell’s daughter.

“When you did work you were proud of, you’d hope for approval or a ‘good job’ from Jeanne as a child would from a parent. When things got too tense, she’d break the tension with her amazing wit. She would teach the younger actors without ever talking down to them. In fact, she would raise them up,” said Bell. “She always had my back and my parents (and our whole family) always had hers.”
