James Gandolfini, the actor who most famously portrayed Tony Soprano on the series “The Sopranos,” has died in Italy at age 51, according to his managers and HBO, which broadcast “The Sopranos.”

“It is with immense sorrow that we report our client James Gandolfini passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy,” said his managers, Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders. “Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving.”

HBO said in a prepared statement, “We’re all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us.”

Gandolfini and his wife Deborah recently became parents of a baby girl, Liliana Ruth Gandolfini, on Oct. 10, 2012, according to USA Today. He also had a son, Michael, with his former wife, Marcy Wudarski, the paper reported.

Danielle Bradbery is The Voice.

The 16-year-old country singer from Cypress, Texas, triumphed in the fourth-season finale of the NBC singing competition, winning the viewer vote Tuesday over the other two finalists: Michelle Chamuel, 26, and the Swon Brothers, Colton, 24, and Zach, 27. Chamuel finished second and the Swon Brothers came in third.

After her name was announced, Bradbery told host Carson Daly that she was thankful but speechless before closing the show with Sara Evans’ Born to Fly. She had performed that song in Monday’s competition finale.

More than an hour later, Bradbery described her moment of victory.

“Me and Michelle were holding onto each other, shaking,” she said on the post-finale red carpet. “When I heard my name, I could not believe it. It’s going to take a while to sink in, but I’m just embracing the moment while it’s here.”

Bradbery said fans “were all so supportive and hopefully I touched a lot of hearts out there to vote for me and keep supporting me. Hopefully, that worked. They’ve been sticking by my side forever and hopefully will continue to.”

The victory by Bradbery, the second female and the youngest singer to win The Voice, represents the third triumph in four seasons for a member of coach Blake Shelton’s team.
gapingvoid art“I wanted to make sure that Nashville respected her as much as they could,” country singer Shelton said after the show. “Obviously, she’s an incredible vocalist, but I wanted them to know that she respects country music and that’s why we kept throwing it back to artists from 10-20 years ago … showing Nashville that she can do that stuff, she can do new stuff. She can perform with Hunter Hayes, she can sing with me. Whatever it is you throw at her she’s capable of doing.”

He thinks Bradbery has a big career ahead of her. Bradbery said she would like to work with Shelton in the future.

“I see us standing here talking about her 20 years from now,” Shelton said. “And I wouldn’t say that with this confidence about anybody else that’s ever been on this show. Danielle Bradbery is a gift to the music industry and definitely a gift to The Voice.”

Shelton said it has been his goal “since Day One” to have a country singer win. That genre was strong in this season’s finale, represented by Bradbery and the Swon Brothers, the show’s most successful duo to date. Both finalists were under the tutelage of Shelton.

“Country fans are loyal, they are amazing and they like to stick by you through everything. I love it,” Bradbery said.

The two-hour finale featured a range of musical stars, including Cher, who sang Woman’s World, the first single of her upcoming album, Closer to the Truth. She recorded her performance in front of The Voice studio audience just before Tuesday’s live broadcast.

After the show, the legendary singer said her first performance before a TV audience in more than five years was “very exciting and it makes you feel elated but it’s also kind of scary. And I’m a big chicken anyway. I like being on it. I just don’t like going on it.”

She said a show like The Voice can help young performers.

“I think shows like this might help you skirt a lot of the bad stuff that could be waiting for you. It’s a great place to go and be seen by everybody and have that feeling that you can actually can do it,” she said. “Sonny (Bono) and I used to play bowling alleys and roller skating rinks. And that was hard to keep telling ourselves, ‘We were good, we were good, we were good.’ ”

Pitbull and Christina Aguilera opened the show with a duet and country’s Florida Georgia Line and hip-hop’s Nelly performed together. Bruno Mars sang his newest single, Treasure, which was taped before the recent death of his mother.

The finalists got their chance to perform with the stars, too. Bob Seger, joined by the Swon Brothers, performed his hit Night Moves. Hayes and Bradbery sang a duet of I Want Crazy and Chamuel and OneRepublic performed Counting Stars.

The Voice switched coaching gears this season, with Usher and Shakira taking over for original coaches Aguilera and CeeLo Green. The two were well received.

Aguilera and Green, who appeared in the first three seasons, will rejoin the show for its fifth cycle this fall, with Usher and Shakira trading off with them for the sixth edition. Coaches Shelton and Adam Levine have been with the show from the start.

The Voice audience is down 1% for Season 4, with an average of 12.4 million viewers, but it beat Fox’s longtime juggernaut American Idol among advertiser-coveted young adults. Idol still draws more viewers, but it has experienced sharp erosion over the past two seasons.

The singing competition, which stands out for its blind auditions and spinning red chairs, is produced by Mark Burnett.

Award-winning journalist Michael Hastings dead at 33

American journalist and war correspondent Michael Hastings has died in a single vehicle car crash in Los Angeles.

News of his death was first reported Tuesday evening by the website BuzzFeed, for which Hastings also wrote.

“We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone,” Ben Smith, BuzzFeed editor in chief, said in a statement posted online shortly before 7 p.m.

“Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians. He wrote stories that would otherwise have gone unwritten, and without him there are great stories that will go untold.

“Michael was also a wonderful, generous colleague, a joy to work with and a lover of corgis — especially his Bobby Sneakers,” Smith continued. “Our thoughts are with Elise and the rest of his family and we are going to miss him.”

Hastings, a Vermont native, was a 1998 graduate of Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington.

His reporting on Gen. Stanley McChrystal and the subsequent story in June 2010 led to the commander’s resignation after he was quoted ridiculing President Obama, Vice President Biden and other administration officials. The story was titled “The Runaway General” and resulted from the considerable access to McChrystal and others that Hastings was granted.

“You never know how a story will be received,” Hastings told the Burlington Free Press.
Hastings also published “I Lost My Love in Baghdad,” in 2010, telling the story of being a young war correspondent whose girlfriend dies in Iraq.

The piece won numerous awards.

Hastings was a regular contributor to Gentlemen’s Quarterly and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine.    He was also a journalist for Newsweek magazine.

Hours after being suspended indefinitely, the three radio hosts  were terminated for mocking the former NFL player.

“We deeply regret the offensive programming that aired this morning on ‘Mayhem In The AM’ on 790 The Zone, related to former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS,” Rick Mack, 790 The Zone senior vice president and general manager, said in a prepared statement. “We suspended the three individuals involved immediately following their comments and have since terminated their employment. 790 The Zone, our owners, sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support this kind of content. We sincerely apologize to Mr. Gleason, his family and all those touched by ALS.”

The Atlanta Falcons also issued a statement on the matter, stating:

“The Falcons are disappointed in the comments made about former Saints player Steve Gleason on a local Atlanta radio station Monday morning. The content concerning Mr. Gleason was completely inappropriate and is not representative of the views of the Falcons organization, nor does it represent the way we conduct our business on and off the field. To single out Steve the way he was this morning is totally lacking in taste and discretion.”

Nick Cellini, offered his apologies before being fired. He tweeted, “My apologies to everyone. It was a stupid attempt at humor that backfired. Emphasis on stupid.”

According to an LSU message board, the radio hosts did this 3 minute joke, where they pretended that Steve Gleason called in and they asked him questions. Most of his responses were in the form of a knock knock joke and at one point, he says he doesn’t know if he will be alive next Thursday.

Rupert Murdoch divorcing Wendi Deng, citing relationship “broken down irretrievably”

News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from Wendi Deng Murdoch, the mother of his two youngest children.

The Murdochs -- Photo credit: AFP/Getty Images

The news, first reported by Deadline Hollywood and confirmed by a spokesman, brings to an end the media mogul’s third marriage.

The divorce filing, which was sealed, comes just days before News Corp is to split into two companies, one containing its entertainment assets and the other holding its publishing business. Murdoch, who Forbes says is worth $9.4 billion, is to be chairman of both publicly traded companies.

Despite the timing, there is no connection between the divorce and the corporate split, said a source close to News Corp who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Analysts said the end of the Murdochs’ marriage was unlikely to have an impact on the media empire. Murdoch and Deng had a prenuptial agreement, according to a person familiar with the situation. Their girls, Grace and Chloe, have stakes in the family trust that holds the Murdochs’ stake in News Corp, but they do not have voting rights.

Murdoch, 82, met Deng in 1997 at a company party in Hong Kong. They were married two years later, less than a month after his divorce from ex-wife Anna Murdoch was finalized after 32 years of marriage.

The couple are believed to have filed for joint custody of their children but there were no details of any settlement. Murdoch has cited irretrievable breakdown in marriage for more than six months as the reason for the divorce.
