Death and Taxes: Wesley Snipes and other Celebs that paid royally – EOTM Media

By Carla B. – Follow us: @eotmpr on Twitter |eotm.media on Facebook

“Why can’t celebrities pay their taxes like the rest of us?”

On April 2nd actor/entrepreneur Wesley Snipes was released from a federal prison and transferred to the New York Community Corrections Office where he will be confined to house arrest until July 19th. TMZ was the first to break the story.

Wesley Snipes - Photo credit: Wikipedia/Getty

In 2006 Snipes was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns in 2008 and began serving his sentence in 2010.

The Vampire Slayer belonged to a group that challenged the government’s right to collect taxes. Prosecutors argued he failed to file returns for at least a decade and owed over 17 million dollars in back taxes.

While some celebrities engage in various attempts to avoid paying taxes, from filing false returns to hiding money overseas, regardless of the method or fame of the individual, the government can force those guilty of tax fraud to pay back taxes and penalties, and serve time in confinement—a costly lesson for an avoidable mistake.

Other celebrities that paid royally to Uncle Sam

1. Martha Stewart: Stewart was forced to pay $220,000 in back taxes and penalties to the State of New York.

2. Ja Rule: Multi-platinum selling rap artist Ja Rule failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million that he earned between 2004 and 2006 while living in Saddle River, NJ.  He pleaded guilty to three counts of unfiled taxes, admitting he hadn’t filed for five years, according to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. The rapper was sentenced to two years in prison. The hip hop star told a federal judge that he had received bad financial advice and had trouble coping with fame.

3. Lauryn Hill: Next up is hip hop icon Lauryn Hill who just happens to reside in the Garden State of New Jersey. In 2012 the grammy-winning singer pleaded guilty in federal court, to three counts of failing to file federal income tax returns. Hill pleaded guilty to failing to file federal returns between 2005 and 2007, despite earning an income of more than $1.8 million. Each count carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

4. Willie Nelson: After seizing most of his assets in 1990, the federal government forced Willie to pay over $16 million in back taxes and fines for his involvement with a bogus tax shelter.

5. Nicolas Cage: According to the IRS, in 2009 Cage owed approximately $6 million in back taxes. The actor accused his ex-manager and accountant of making poor investment choices.

6. Marc Anthony: In 2007, the IRS served Anthony with $2.5 million in back tax bills. Then in 2010, he received two additional bills totaling over $3 million for unpaid taxes on real estate. Marc Anthony also blamed management.

7. Heidi Fleiss: Known as “The Hollywood Madam,” Fleiss ran a prostitution ring during the early 1990s. Although she never named names, her business attracted clients who were well-known and well-off. Ultimately, she was arrested in June 1993. Fleiss was convicted of federal tax evasion charges, which carried a seven-year prison sentence.

8. Pete Rose: Rose made his name with the Cincinnati Reds, first as a player and later as a manager. Despite his many on-field accomplishments the Baseball icon was caught gambling on games, including those played by his own team. He was sentenced to five months in prison and fined $50,000 for tax evasion, according to The Associated Press.

9. Martha Stewart: The savvy business woman accumulated a $220,000 tax debt for not paying taxes on her East Hampton, New York, home, which she claimed she spent very little time at and therefore thought she didn’t need to pay taxes on. She was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home confinement. Stewart was also fined $30,000.

Death and taxes may be equally inevitable, but Uncle Sam demands the last word.

TMZ  first reported Ashley Greene’s West Hollywood apartment was destroyed in a early morning fire on Friday. Apparently her boyfriend and her brother managed to wake up in time to escape the blaze, which broke out on a couch in the living room.

Unfortunately the two men were unsuccessful in their attempts to return to rescue Greene’s pets. By the time firefighters were able to get the fire under control, they could only save one of the two animals, and found the other dead in a hiding spot under Greene’s bed.

“We were dispatched at 9:50 a.m. PST to reports of a highrise fire,” Inspector Quvondo Johnson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department told the Daily News. “We did see smoke and fire from the third floor when we arrived. Based on the occupany load of the building, we quickly raised it to a two alarm fire.”

Fifty-five firefighters responded to the scene and brought the fire under control by 10:07 a.m. PST.

    Manti Te’o: A linebacker, a made-up girlfriend and a national hoax

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 17th, 2013 - in Breaking Dawn, College News, EOTM Sports News, Sports News, Trending, World News

    Via CNN

This may be the strangest twist in a tale overflowing with strangeness.

Manti Te’o's deceased girlfriend tweeted late Wednesday night.

    Getty Image

On a Twitter account — not verified, naturally — the “girlfriend” said the “myths” about the story that have sports fans scratching their heads will be addressed Thursday.

The Twitter account appears to have deleted all the previous messages sent to Te’o and seems to have been created Thursday. It is unclear if the same person who sent tweets before from that account reactivated it after reports broke — or if someone else created the account.

Whatever the “girlfriend” says, she’ll find it hard to top what’s already come out about the Notre Dame linebacker and the woman he called the “love of my life.”

First, sports website Deadspin published a piece dismissing as a hoax the existence of Te’o's girlfriend — the one who he said died around the same time as his real-life grandmother while his team marched toward the BCS National Championship Game.

Then Wednesday, the university held a press conference saying Te’o was the victim of a “elaborate hoax.” And Te’o, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, released a statement saying he was embarrassed that he was the victim of a “sick joke.”

The bizarre developments left many wondering if they, instead of Te’o, were led on — and whether the heralded linebacker was in on it.

“Te’o's story that he is completely innocent in this does not really ring true to us,” Timothy Burke, co-author of the Deadspin article, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Wednesday night.

    The hoax

The story of the girlfriend came to light in September as Notre Dame continued its improbable undefeated season and Te’o, a relentless tackler, was beginning to emerge as a frontrunner for the prestigous Heisman Trophy.

He led the Fighting Irish, amassing multiple double-digit tackle games and becoming the face of one of the best defenses in the nation.

In September and October, Te’o told interviewers that his girlfriend and his grandmother had died within hours of each other. The girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, a 22-year-old Stanford University student who had been in a serious car crash, died of leukemia, he said.

The twin losses inspired him to honor them with sterling play on the field, Te’o said. He led his team to a 20-3 routing of Michigan State after he heard the news.

“I miss ‘em, but I know that I’ll see them again one day,” he told ESPN.

It was indeed a gripping interest story of determination. And the media ran with it.

No one bothered to seek out Kekua’s family to ask how they felt about the way Te’o was honoring their daughter. Until Deadspin, acting on an anonymous e-mail it received last week, started poking around.

“What do you do when you first want to know something, you Google it, right?” Burke said on CNN. “And Google searches for ‘Lennay Kekua’ only showed up articles about her dying, and inspiring Mant’i Teo.

“There’s no evidence of her existing in any way, other than, you know, after she had allegedly died. And we thought that was a little weird.”

Te’o's grandmother did in fact die in September, Deadspin said. But there was no Social Security Administration record of Kekua’s death.

The website called mortuaries and funeral homes in Carson, California, where Kekua was reportedly buried — but came up empty. They sought out the person whose picture had been presented as that of Kekua and tracked her down.

    Timeline: How the story unfolded

She was alive, didn’t have leukemia and had never met Te’o.

“That sort of opened everything up,” Burke said.

The revelation prompted the athletics director of Notre Dame to call a news conference Wednesday. There was no way for Te’o to know the relationship was a hoax because it had been conducted strictly online and on the phone, said director Jack Swarbrick.

The pair had set up several meetings, including in Hawaii, where Te’o grew up — but Kekua never showed, Swarbrick said.

The university said it did not know how many people were in on the ruse.

According to Swarbrick, Te’o received a call from a woman claiming to be his girlfriend in December, telling him she was not dead. Those calls continued but Te’o did not answer, he said.

Stanford University’s registrar’s office told CNN that it has never had a student registered in Kekua’s name or using an alternate spelling.

“Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there’s no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed,” Deadspin contends. “There was no Lennay Kekua.”

    Te’o in his own words

    Her ‘soulful eyes’

So, how did the two fall in love?

If the South Bend Tribune in Indiana — the newspaper of Notre Dame’s home town — is to be believed, the two met — yes, met — after a football game in Palo Alto, California, in 2009.

“Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te’o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes,” the paper gushed. “They could have just as easily brushed past each other and into separate sunsets. Te’o had plenty to preoccupy himself that November weekend in Palo Alto, Calif., back in 2009.”

The article went on to say: “Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago.”

Te’o's father, Brian, was quoted in the article: “They started out as just friends. Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.”

Media reports indicate the parents never met Kekua.

The newspaper said Wednesday it based the details on information from Te’o, his family members and coaches — and pulled the story from its website.

Social media jump all over hoax story

Te’o tried to clear things up with a statement Wednesday saying he “developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online.”

“We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.”

In his statement, reported by ESPN, the star said, “To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

“It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.”

Will the real Kekua please stand up?

Late Wednesday night, the story took another twist when ESPN found an NFL player who said he knew Kekua and that she is a real woman. The player, Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals fullback, told the sports network that he and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu met her

“This was before her and Manti,” Mauia told ESPN. “I don’t think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family.”

Who’s who on the Internet? Who knows

Then later Wednesday night came a tweet from @LennayKay — a Twitter handle that once was associated with Kekua.

“It isn’t fair to drag Reagan and Troy into this.. a lot of truths and myths need to be addressed here, and they will be at noon PST tomorrow,” the tweet said.

The other two tweets on the page were retweets from the verified account of Te’o.

    “@LennayKay I miss you!” said a November 6 tweet from Te’o's said.

On September 12, Te’o tweeted “@LennayKay you will always be with me wherever I go!”

    Now that may be true.

Ravens Top Broncos in Double OT 38-35

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 12th, 2013 - in Breaking Dawn, Entertainment News, NFL, Sports News

    Via ABC News

By EDDIE PELLS AP National Writer DENVER January 13, 2013 (AP)

No matter where his season or his career might end, Joe Flacco will always have The Fling.

And Peyton Manning will always have to live with that throw he made, too.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Trindon Holliday celebrates after running a punt return back 90 yards for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in the first quarter of an AFC divisional playoff NFL football game, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Denver. (AP Photo/Joe Mahoney

Flacco’s desperation 70-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones with 31 seconds left in regulation saved the game for Baltimore in regulation and Manning’s throw across his body in overtime all but lost it for Denver.

On a frostbitten day in the frozen tundra known as Denver, the Ravens got a 47-yard field goal from Justin Tucker 1:42 into the second overtime Saturday to pull off a 38-35 upset over Manning and the Broncos, extending linebacker Ray Lewis’ career by at least one game.

Lewis, who led the Ravens with 17 tackles over this nearly 77-minute game, kneeled down to the ground and put his helmet on the rock-solid turf when it was over.

After he thaws out, the Ravens (12-6), 9½-point underdogs for this one, will get ready for a game at either New England or Houston, who meet Sunday for the other spot in the AFC title game.

“Our team is so confident and everything went against us,” Lewis said, “but we found a way to come here together and we’re leaving together. It’s just awesome.”

This game, the longest since the Browns beat Cleveland 23-20 in 1987, was an all-timer — up there with San Diego’s 41-38 double-overtime victory over Miami for drama. But Flacco’s throw might best be bookended next to one made by Roger Staubuch, who famously coined the term “Hail Mary” after his game-winning toss to Drew Pearson beat Minnesota in the 1975 playoffs.

How else to describe the Flacco throw?

Subscribe to Sports WeeklyOn third-and-3 from his 30 with 41 seconds and no timeouts left, Flacco bought time in the pocket and saw Jones sprinting down the right sideline into double coverage. Defensive back Tony Carter slowed up and let Jones streak by him. Instead of staying step for step with Jones, safety Rahim Moore tried to leap and knock down the ball. Flacco, who throws the high, deep ball as well as anyone, got it over Moore’s head and into Jones’ hands.

Jones caught it and pranced into the end zone, blowing kisses to the crowd.

The Broncos chose to kneel on the ball to end regulation.

The teams punted three times to start overtime, setting up Denver on its 7-yard line. Manning was moving the Broncos along slowly and steadily. But on second-and-6 from the 38, he rolled to his right, stopped and threw across the field to Brandon Stokley. Graham stepped in front of the receiver for the interception, bookending the pick he made in the first quarter, which he returned 39 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

The temperature at kickoff was 13 degrees, and Manning fell to 0-4 lifetime when the temperature is 40 or less. He finished 28 for 43 for 290 yards and accounted for all three Denver turnovers — the two picks and a lost fumble that set up the touchdown that tied the game at 28 late in the third quarter.

Those mistakes nullified a record-setting day for returner Trindon Holliday, who returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and a kickoff 104 yards for another score. Both were playoff records for longest returns, as was the 248 total return yards he had.

    All for naught.

This was, more or less, the unthinkable for the Broncos, who came in on an 11-game winning streak and the odds-on favorite, at 3-1, to win the Super Bowl, in Manning’s hometown of New Orleans, no less.

Instead, this loss goes down with the most devastating in Denver history. Right there with the 30-27 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Jan. 4, 1997 — another year when Denver looked like Super Bowl material.

But it’s Baltimore and Lewis who are in the AFC title game for the second straight year.

Miley Cyrus dances with strippers: Wildest pop star ever?

Published by EOTM News Editor on December 11th, 2012 - in Breaking Dawn, Celebrity News, Entertainment News, Music News, Video of the Week

Miley Cyrus turned more than a few heads as she performed in an S&M-style outfit, including a cropped cleavage-baring top, at a Christmas show on Saturday night. She also wore tight black trousers that were linked to her neck by a chain, paired with thigh-high leopard-print boots, as she appeared alongside topless strippers at Israeli DJ Borgore’s “Christmas Creampies” show.

With previous controversies to her name, including pole dancing onstage, is Miley the wildest pop star out there? She has some tough competition. Rihanna barely goes a week without posting a half-naked picture on Twitter, while Lady Gaga is usually either naked or in her underwear during her videos and stage shows.

Then there’s Katy Perry who got her segment banned from “Sesame Street” thanks to a revealing performance. And Christina Aguilera went as far as having a single called “Dirrty” and an album called “Stripped.”

US iTunes, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store
And of course there are the veterans, Britney and Madonna, who regularly star in provocative videos and stage shows when they’re not too busy kissing each other.

Which pop star do you think is the wildest?
