It’s Official – All My Children and One Life To Live – Cancelled – Send your Farewells

YES, it’s official — ABC has announced they have cancelled “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.”

This is a sad time for soap opera fans worldwide. ABC recently confirmed the dreaded rumor that has been floating around for months that the sun will set permanently in the fictional towns of Pine Valley and Llanview, as ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live’ wrap up for good.

“To honor the core, passionate audience and their rich history with our soaps,” both shows will conclude “in a manner that respects their legacies and the longstanding hopes of many of their viewers,” reads a press release from ABC.

ABC big wigs point out to viewers that times are changing and say they were “guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want,” and blame, in part, “the changing viewing patterns of the audience” for the gut wrenching news.

‘All My Children’ began in 1970, ‘One Life to Live began’ 2 years prior, in 1968. AMC’s last episode will air in September, while OLTL will end in January of  2012. The only soap remaining on ABC is “General Hospital.”

Every Public Relations organization has a code of ethics which the members are expected to abide. The primary objective of this code of ethics is to form guidelines to educate members on how they should conduct themselves in their professional lives. Despite these guidelines, ethics in individual practice is deeply troubling for PR professionals and consistent violation has been a matter of debate for years. Most critics have complained that the ethics ‘have no teeth’ and one cynic as quoted by PR Sourcewatch says, “real ethical behavior is expensive, and that’s where the PR industry’s ethical dilemma
originates. All of the major public relations firms routinely engage in unethical practices and they don’t do it because they are evil people. They do it because their wealthy clients have problems, and cleaning up their image is often easier and cheaper than cleaning up their mess’.

In this section I will also discuss how having a strong sense of ethics and of how to arrive at ethical decisions can enhance the career prospects of public relations professionals.
