“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” said MacFarlane. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”

Actress Sean Young arrested at post-Oscars party

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Sean Young was arrested after a scuffle with a security guard at the official post-Oscars party, police said Monday.

Young, 52, was placed under citizen’s arrest at the Governors Ball at 9:25 p.m. Sunday after the dispute, police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said.

“She was trying to get into the party and couldn’t get in,” he said.

Young, who has starred in “Blade Runner” and “Stripes,” was booked at the Hollywood police station for investigation of misdemeanor battery. She posted $20,000 bail and was released early Monday.

The actress, who was wearing a ball gown, was taken into custody quickly, said Tom Januszewski, an Associated Press business executive who witnessed the incident. He said he saw a guard subdue Young by placing his forearm on her neck and head while other guards placed her in handcuffs and led her away.

Young didn’t speak as she was being led away, Januszewski said.

“It happened incredibly fast,” he said.

The actress tried to crash the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2006. She entered rehabilitation for alcohol abuse in 2008 after she was removed from the Directors Guild of America awards.

A voice mail message left early Monday for Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences publicist Tarrah Lee Curtis wasn’t immediately returned. A phone message left for Young’s agent, David Shapira, also was not immediately returned.

Oscars 2012: George Clooney says Academy should ‘diversify’

The Oscars 2012 compcov
George Clooney has said at the 2012 Oscars that he hopes the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will become more diverse.

A member of the Academy since 2006, Clooney responded to a question about the predominance of white, middle-aged men in the Oscars organization during a interview on the red carpet.

“That would be a good idea, don’t you think?” he told the Los Angeles Times.

“I think it represents directors in Hollywood, as well. It represents not just Hollywood. You can look at the Senate and it’s roughly the same thing. I don’t think to diversify is ever a bad idea.

“It’s a tricky thing. I think you’d have to open it up to more, as opposed to trying to kick people out,” he continued. “Instead of taking their cards away.”

Clooney’s The Descendants was nominated for five awards, receiving one win for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’.

The actor also correctly predicted the success of The Artist, saying that it would be “a pretty big French night”.

The Artist and Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo both claimed five wins each, with Clooney losing out in the ‘Best Actor’ category to The Artist‘s Jean Dujardin.

Academy Awards 2012: Follow the Oscars live on Twitter

It’s that time of year again, the 2012 Academy Awards is upon us, and it seems that everything old is new again.

Best picture contenders “The Artist,” “Hugo” and “Midnight in Paris” hark back to the early days of cinema. Billy Crystal will be back for his ninth time as host. And the ceremony hall is expected to be decorated like a classic movie palace on Sunday night.

EOTM TV reporters Carla B & Teangelo @ 84th Annual Academy Awards

Yet the Oscar proceedings may break out of the mold as well.

It’s possible that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may award statuettes to two African American actresses — Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer — on the same night. Neither nominee for best song will be performed during the show — a break with tradition. And on the red carpet, Sacha Baron Cohen may  disrupt decorum by showing up as his character from the upcoming film “The Dictator.”

The red carpet is expected to get underway about 3 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, with the ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. and being televised live on ABC.

You can follow the action Sunday night as EOTM reporters tweet about the Academy Awards show below.

The Oscars’ Past and Present

It’s Oscar week in Hollywood. The Kodak Theater is the latest in a long line of venues to host the big show, but what is the future of the Academy Awards?

Getting ready for the annual broadcast of the Academy Awards takes a lot of preparation and a whole week to get it just right.

It wasn’t always so complicated.

The awards were first passed out at a ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles in 1929.

The awards moved to the Ambassador Hotel the next year and then on to the Biltmore.

Twelve years later, Oscar came back to Hollywood Boulevard for three years at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and then Oscar was off to the Shrine and on to the Pantages. Then the awards even headed out to the beach and Santa Monica’s Civic Auditorium from 1961 to 1968.

And then the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion opened its doors to the show and swapped years with the Shrine Auditorium from 1969 to 2001.

Since 2002, the Kodak Theater has been Oscar’s party place.

But now Kodak can no longer afford to pay for its name on the theater. The Eastman Kodak Co. is in the middle of bankruptcy proceedings and has received court approval to end its sponsorship deal with the Hollywood theater.

So the Academy is weighing its options for the show two years from now.

The Nokia Theater is the most talked about alternative for the future.

But as for this year, fans are excited.

“It’s nice to see and to imagine that next week the stars will go here and celebrate the Oscars,” said fan Anne Birnitzer.

Tune in live for Oscar Sunday,February 26th @ 7 EST-4PST

Oprah Winfrey honored with Oscars humanitarian prize at Governors Awards

LOS ANGELES — Oprah Winfrey was honored at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards ceremony late Saturday alongside the actor James Earl Jones and the make-up artist Dick Smith.

Getty Images

Winfrey, 57, won the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the black-tie event held at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The academy has given out the award intermittently since 1956. The academy said the award is given periodically to an "individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry."

Past recipients include Bob Hope, Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn.

Earl Jones and Smith each received Honorary Awards for their contributions to the film industry.

Wearing a dazzling red dress, Winfrey broke down on stage after receiving three standing ovations in recognition of her humanitarian work in the US and South Africa, the newspaper reported.

"We can all make a difference for how we live a life," Winfrey said.

This year was the third consecutive year that the academy has made the Governors Awards a separate event from the Oscars. Previously, the awards were handed out during the Oscars telecast.

How a Tweet Brought Down Brett Ratner’s Academy Awards® run

D.C. Douglas, an actor and voice-over specialist, first tweeted about Ratner saying “rehearsal’s for fags.” The ensuing firestorm has ended with Ratner and host Eddie Murphy exiting the show and Brian Grazer taking over as producer.

Last Friday night, D.C. Douglas, an actor and voice-over specialist, took his girlfriend to a special screening of Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist at the Hollywood’s Arclight Cinemas. Little did Douglas know that Ratner’s post-show question-and-answer session after the movie—and Douglas’ reaction to it on Twitter—would put him at the center of a controversy that has funamentally changed the 2012 Academy Awards.

The Hollywood Reporter tracked down Douglas, whose tweet noting that Ratner had said “Rehearsing is for fags” during the Q&A prompted the maelstrom of news coverage that eventually led to Ratner (and then host Eddie Murphy) stepping down from the Oscar telecast.
