The Movie Maniac San Diego Comic-Con Preview – DAY ONE

Stay connected to EOTM! Online & EOTM Radio for live coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2012.

By Greg Reifsteck – Follow on Twitter @moviemaniaceotm & Facebook @Movie Maniac

The Good, the Bad-Ass and the Undead.

Going to San Diego Comic-Con used to be a different experience.  It wasn’t about getting a big bag of swag and lining up at 4 a.m. to see some big name celebrities in Hall H. It used to be a social experience to meet up with the same comic book fans year after year back, and be with like-minded people.

(c) 2012 Lionsgate Films

Now with the overcrowding of 120,000 comic book, movie and TV buffs squeezing into the exhibit halls and corridors of the San Diego convention center, and all of the movie and TV studios plugging their latest projects, Comic-Con has become a sociological experiment unlike any other.

Being the Movie Maniac, I will be bringing you up-to-the-minute online updates of the cinematic action going on at the Con on the EOTM Blog.

I will also be doing a round-up, including interviews from the convention on my new internet radio show Greg Reifsteck Movie Maniac debuting Sunday July 22, 5 p.m. PST on EOTM Radio.

Here is part one of a preview of what I feel will be the movie highlights of the Con.

DAY ONE -Thursday, July 12

The first day of the Con looks to be a marathon that won’t let up.  Twihards will collide with Disney freaks and muscle head fans, all parking themselves in Hall H.

11:45 a.m. – Stan Lee’s World of Heroes Panel- Room 6BCF

What a fitting way to start the Con, by bowing down to one of the masters. Stan the Man will be joined by Luke Skywalker himself Mark Hamill and hottie Adrienne Curry to discuss his latest online venture.

12:45 p.m. – Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – Hall H

Twihards will be camped out in the fitting darkness of the early morning to get into this one.  Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and the rest of the blood suckers from the film series finale will be in attendance.

(c) 2012 Summit Entertainment

2:05 p.m.  - Walt Disney Studios Panel- Hall H

It’s a heavy hitter panel with the Mouse House trotting out the two mega directors that will revive the studio after last year’s John Carter from Mars debacle: Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful.  Also being featured will be the animated ode to 8-bit video games Wreck It Ralph, that my sore thumbs are going A,B,A,B, left, right, start over in excitement . Stars John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman will be in attendance.

3:00 p.m. 1982- Greatest Geek Year Ever Panel – Room 5AB

If you cannot get into the Hall from Hell, this lively retro panel will be a highlight for anyone from the MTV generation.

The editors of Geek Magazine along with a panel of other writers will discuss the year that gave us Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner, E.T., Tron, Poltergeist, Conan: The Barbarian, The Road Warrior, The Thing, Liquid Sky, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Diner and 48 Hours.

3:00 p.m.  Hotel Transylvania Panel- Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront

More alternative programming if you cannot get into the Disney panel. A must-check-out for horror and animation fans, this hilarious-looking film will be presented by its director Genndy Tartakovsky.

4:45 p.m. Expendables 2 Panel- Hall H.

All of the big guys are back in Lionsgate’s sequel to the Sylvester Stallone-directed mega action star mash up. Van Damme, Schwarzenegger, Lundgren, Randy Couture and Terry Crews all will be there in their HGH inflated glory.

5:00 p.m – The Most Dangerous Women at Comic-Con Panel – Room 7AB

It’s tough to be a woman in the testosterone-fueled action film industry.  Here will be some good estrogen-driven counter programming to the dudes in the Big Hall. Katrina Hill (GeekNation, MTV Geek) has assembled a team of women dangerous in their own right: Leah Cevoli (Robot Chicken), Holly Conrad (Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope), Adrianne Curry (Stan Lee’s World of Heroes), Clare Kramer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Patricia Tallman (Night of the Living Dead) and many others with moderator Bonnie Burton.

8:30 p.m. – Comicon: Episode IV : A Fan’s Hope Screening and Panel- Ballroom 20

Documentarian Morgan Spurlock will put a capper on the day with his take on the Comic-Con phenomenon.

Petco Park Insanity

This year the Con has gotten so ginormous, it has spilled over into Petco Park next door.  From 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and in the daytime on Friday and Saturday, there will be the unbelievable Walking Dead Escape fan experience www.thewalkingdeadescape.com where you can hunt the undead or be a hunted zombie in a wicked looking 35 to 55 minute maze that overtakes parts of three levels of the baseball park. Price levels vary for the type of treachery you want to take in.

At night the first ever Dawn of the Con will take place at the park for Con badge holders only from 5:30 to 11 p.m…  Rob Zombie will be the master of ceremonies, presenting a concert of remixes of his classic songs. There will also be exclusive giveaways every hour, as well as a photo op experience with Zombie’s Dragula car.

Robert Pattinson leaves vampires behind in ‘Cosmopolis’

CANNES, France (AP) — Robert Pattinson has gone from playing a vampire to depicting another kind of bloodsucker — a billionaire financier whose world crumbles in the course of a nightmarish cross-town drive in “Cosmopolis.”

Getty Images

The “Twilight” heartthrob stars in David Cronenberg’s Cannes Film Festival entry as sleek, self-centered moneyman Eric Packer, who sees his fortune and sense of self evaporate during an eventful day in his stretch limo.

Pattinson’s famously handsome face is on-screen in every scene, but “Twilight”’s young fans may be surprised and confused by a film that explores Cronenberg’s fascination with physical, social and psychic violence.

The 26-year-old actor is not worried.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Buzz

“If some 12-year-olds went to go and see that, or got the video for their birthday — sitting down and watching that, it’s incredible,” the actor said during an interview on a Cannes hotel rooftop. “I would love that to happen if I was a kid.”

It’s a bit of amiable mischief-making from an actor who wants to be known as more than doe-eyed vampire Edward Cullen, in love with human Bella Swan in the “Twilight” saga.

Gear Up for Twilight!

He said he craves the cinematic understatement that blockbusters don’t always provide.

“I remember when I was in the first ‘Twilight’ movie, I really wanted to not have Edward touch Bella, apart from when he saves her life and when they kiss the first time,” said Pattinson, lightly rumpled but friendly and poised after a long day of press interviews. “I was thinking of the (Ang Lee) movie ‘Lust, Caution,’ and thinking there should be this tension there the whole time — just standing near someone there’s electricity.

“But sometimes it just makes things too hard. You kind of forget that most people want to go to the cinema just to watch a movie rather than watch something really weird.”

“Weird” is par for the course with Cronenberg, and Pattinson gets plenty of scope to stretch himself in “Cosmopolis,” playing a hollow-eyed Master of the Universe forced to confront his mortality.

Events, emotion and violence keep intruding on the hermetically sealed universe of his limo as he tries, futilely, to cross a crisis-wracked Manhattan in search of a haircut.

Packer crosses paths with characters including his aloof wife (Sarah Gadon), his arty lover (Juliette Binoche), a pie-throwing protester (Mathieu Amalric) and a murderously angry former employee (Paul Giamatti).

Packer is not, to put it mildly, a likable character. Some have seen him as an avatar of Wall Street excess, but Pattinson says he watched interviews with serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy, rather than real-life financiers, to help him create the character’s voice.

“He’s like an alien,” Pattinson said of the character.

“He’s not part of his body. Everything is an abstraction. The world’s an abstraction. Everything is.”

The film has been widely described as a dystopian reflection of the present crisis of capitalism — but Pattinson sees it in a more cheerful light, as Packer learns to face his humanity.

“I always thought it’s kind of a happy story, up until the right at the very end,” he said.

“He’s suddenly starting to feel and he becomes more physical as the day goes on, more alive. He feels like he’s part of the world.”

Packer is cut off from other humans by wealth and temperament, cocooned in his car and protected by vigilant bodyguards. Pattinson has, to an extent, been cut off by fame. He and his girlfriend and “Twilight” co-star Kristen Stewart are magnets for paparazzi and fans.

Pattinson said the experience had given him insight into some aspects of Packer’s situation.

“Some of the stuff with the bodyguard, because when I’m doing press and stuff and when I’m working I have a bodyguard who I get really close with,” he said. “There’s a very specific relationship and that was one of the things I kind of got.”

Pattinson’s “Twilight” fame has trailed with him around Cannes, but Cronenberg said it had no bearing on his decision to cast the actor.

“You must ignore the baggage,” the director said.

“It is very easy to say that this character, Eric Packer, is vampire or a werewolf of Wall Street, But really that’s rather superficial. He’s a real character and a real person in the movie.

“This is a real person, with a history and a past. And the history and the past is not ‘Twilight.’ It’s ‘Cosmopolis.’”

Pattinson came to Cannes with Stewart, who appears in Jack Kerouac adaptation “On the Road.”

“She found out a lot earlier than I did that it (“On the Road”) was in competition,” Pattinson said — leaving him seething.

He’s happy now, though, and still can’t believe the reaction to the strange and unsettling “Cosmopolis.”

“When there’s people screaming outside, I’m like, ‘This is incredible,’” he said. “That people are screaming for this, the most bizarre movie — it’s amazing.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone to get it. Even last night (at the premiere), I was expecting everyone to walk out.”

Kristen Stewart Hurt On Set…”Snow White”movie doomed for failure?

Twilight star Kristen Stewart was reportedly hurt on set of her new film, Snow White and the Huntsman. Details of her injury are sketchy but production is set to continue on Friday. An unknown extra in the film, Max Manganello announced the news on Twitter, “It’s a wrap for today. Kristen has hurt herself … nothing scary. We shoot on Friday.”  The tweet has since been removed.

Rankin/Universal Studios

The film is expected to open on June 1, 2012 and also features Charlize Theron (the Evil Queen), Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman) and Sam Claflin (Prince Charming).

Instead of dressed in the trademark blue and yellow gown, Kristen Stewart’s Snow White is hidden inside heavy armor. “It makes you feel kind of strong occasionally, sometimes. You kind of feel tiny. My tiny bobblehead…my pinhead kind of sticks out of this thing,” Stewart said of the costume designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood.
