Who is Paul McCartney? The toast of the music industry

(CBS/AP) Paul McCartney was the toast of the music industry this weekend. After being celebrated Friday night at MusicCares person the year, he performed a song from his just-released album during Sunday’s Grammy telecast and led a rousing closing act with Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen and Joe Walsh.

In fact, McCartney was so ubiquitous – he even smooched with Lady Gaga – this weekend that on Monday a “Who is Paul McCartney” twitter trend started . (Surely, it’s a joke?)

Coldplay, Katy Perry, Tony Bennett and Neil Young plumbed Paul McCartney’s vast songbook Friday night in taking the former Beatle on a musical journey of his more than 50-year career. They joined James Taylor, Diana Krall and Foo Fighters among others in launching Grammy weekend by honoring McCartney at the MusiCares tribute at Los Angeles Convention Center.

Among the star-studded crowd of 2,800 were Yoko Ono, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, David Crosby, Rosanna Arquette, Bonnie Raitt, Berry Gordy, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, music executive LA Reid, songwriter Diane Warren, Piers Morgan, and actor John Stamos.

Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said, “We love Paul and we’re happy to be here” before launching into “We Can Work It Out.”

On Friday night McCartney treated the crowd to the same performance he would give Grammy audiences Sunday. He performed “My Valentine,” a song he wrote for new wife Nancy Shevell, from his just released album “Kisses On the Bottom.”

Paul McCartney closed the 54th Grammys ceremony last night with an “Abbey Road” medley of “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End.”

He started at the piano and then moved to guitar and was joined in the bring-the-house-down collaboration by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and Joe Walsh of the Eagles.

“Basically me, George [Harrison] and Ringo [Starr] said, ‘Does this have to be final? Could we do a couple of gigs or can we think about this tomorrow?,’ ” McCartney recalled. “But John was off with Yoko [Ono] and he was saying, ‘No, no, it’s great — I feel a release,’ and all that. So that was kind of final.”

Paul McCartney has had a lot to say about the Beatles as of late. Earlier this month he attended the fifth anniversary of the Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas and gave an unannounced speech at the end of it. All this timed with some fancy repackaged rereleases from his solo catalog, new plans for an upcoming all-covers album, and the announcement that he’ll perform two shows in New York’s Yankee Stadium as well as engagements in Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati this summer. You know — stuff knights do.
