After being with the New York Jets one season, Tim Tebow has been released.  The Jets confirmed the news in a press release early Monday.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” coach Rex Ryan said. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this off season. We wish him the best moving forward.”

Tebow was informed early Monday morning in a face-to-face meeting at the team’s facility with Ryan and general manager John Idzik, according to the Washington Post.

On Friday, the Jets made it clear that they were going in another direction by taking West Virginia’s Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft. He was the sixth QB on their roster (along with Greg McElroy, David Garrard and Matt Simms).

The NFL quaterback, speaking in Fort Worth on Sunday night, was asked about his future and said that he is “a member of the New York Jets.” He said that, the Star-Telegram’s Charean Williams reported, with a smile.

Former NFL Player Kwame Harris talks about coming out as a Gay Man

Published by EOTM News Editor on March 29th, 2013 - in Breaking News, Entertainment News, NFL, Sports, Sports News

Former NFL player Kwame Harris officially came out in an interview on CNN conducted by a former Stanford teammate, Coy Wire.

Kwame Harris - USA Sports

Harris was the 49ers’ first-round draft pick in 2003 from Stanford. The football star kept his sexual orientation private throughout his career.

It stayed that way until days before the 2013 Super Bowl when Harris appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court regarding allegations he assaulted an ex-boyfriend.

In the CNN interview that aired earlier today Harris said he did not consider outing himself as the NFL’s first active gay player during his career, which spanned five seasons with the 49ers before a 2008 exit with the Raiders.

“No, not while I was playing. I didn’t see those two things as being compatible. But now, when I look back in hindsight, if I could have done it differently, I’d like to think I would find the strength or find the fortitude or grace to kind of make the hard decision,” Harris said.

“You want to escape the despair and turmoil and your mind goes to dark places,” Harris said of keeping his sexuality secret. “I’m happy today, and I’m glad they were just ideas and I didn’t act on any of them. The cost was great in asking me to not speak candidly or be able to be open about myself in a complete manner”, he continued.

@EOTMPR Twitter Recap of NFC Championships – San Francisco @49ers vs Atlanta_Falcons

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 20th, 2013 - in Breaking News, NFL, Sports, Sports News

EOTM Sports Writer Carla B. aka @EOTMPR Twitter Recap:  SanFrancisco 49ers vs Atlanta Falcons

Final Score 28-24

The San Francisco 49ers are headed back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1994 season. Frank Gore scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half and the 49ers rallied past the Atlanta Falcons, 28-24, in the NFC Championship Game.

“We rose up at the end. That was a great finish for our defense,” Harbaugh said. “It put an exclamation point on the game.”
The victory was sweet redemption for San Francisco, which lost to the Super Bowl champion New York Giants in the NFC title game last year.
Jones caught 11 passes for 182 yards and two scores, White hauled in seven passes for 100 yards and Tony Gonzalez caught eight passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.

“We just didn’t make enough plays to win the ballgame,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “We played hard and we had our chances for this to be a different outcome. We just came up short.”

The Falcons scored a touchdown with 25 seconds left in the first half to take a 24-14 lead into the locker room but couldn’t keep up the momentum in the second half.

Ravens Top Broncos in Double OT 38-35

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 12th, 2013 - in Breaking Dawn, Entertainment News, NFL, Sports News

Via ABC News

By EDDIE PELLS AP National Writer DENVER January 13, 2013 (AP)

No matter where his season or his career might end, Joe Flacco will always have The Fling.

And Peyton Manning will always have to live with that throw he made, too.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Trindon Holliday celebrates after running a punt return back 90 yards for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in the first quarter of an AFC divisional playoff NFL football game, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in Denver. (AP Photo/Joe Mahoney

Flacco’s desperation 70-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones with 31 seconds left in regulation saved the game for Baltimore in regulation and Manning’s throw across his body in overtime all but lost it for Denver.

On a frostbitten day in the frozen tundra known as Denver, the Ravens got a 47-yard field goal from Justin Tucker 1:42 into the second overtime Saturday to pull off a 38-35 upset over Manning and the Broncos, extending linebacker Ray Lewis’ career by at least one game.

Lewis, who led the Ravens with 17 tackles over this nearly 77-minute game, kneeled down to the ground and put his helmet on the rock-solid turf when it was over.

After he thaws out, the Ravens (12-6), 9½-point underdogs for this one, will get ready for a game at either New England or Houston, who meet Sunday for the other spot in the AFC title game.

“Our team is so confident and everything went against us,” Lewis said, “but we found a way to come here together and we’re leaving together. It’s just awesome.”

This game, the longest since the Browns beat Cleveland 23-20 in 1987, was an all-timer — up there with San Diego’s 41-38 double-overtime victory over Miami for drama. But Flacco’s throw might best be bookended next to one made by Roger Staubuch, who famously coined the term “Hail Mary” after his game-winning toss to Drew Pearson beat Minnesota in the 1975 playoffs.

How else to describe the Flacco throw?

Subscribe to Sports WeeklyOn third-and-3 from his 30 with 41 seconds and no timeouts left, Flacco bought time in the pocket and saw Jones sprinting down the right sideline into double coverage. Defensive back Tony Carter slowed up and let Jones streak by him. Instead of staying step for step with Jones, safety Rahim Moore tried to leap and knock down the ball. Flacco, who throws the high, deep ball as well as anyone, got it over Moore’s head and into Jones’ hands.

Jones caught it and pranced into the end zone, blowing kisses to the crowd.

The Broncos chose to kneel on the ball to end regulation.

The teams punted three times to start overtime, setting up Denver on its 7-yard line. Manning was moving the Broncos along slowly and steadily. But on second-and-6 from the 38, he rolled to his right, stopped and threw across the field to Brandon Stokley. Graham stepped in front of the receiver for the interception, bookending the pick he made in the first quarter, which he returned 39 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

The temperature at kickoff was 13 degrees, and Manning fell to 0-4 lifetime when the temperature is 40 or less. He finished 28 for 43 for 290 yards and accounted for all three Denver turnovers — the two picks and a lost fumble that set up the touchdown that tied the game at 28 late in the third quarter.

Those mistakes nullified a record-setting day for returner Trindon Holliday, who returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and a kickoff 104 yards for another score. Both were playoff records for longest returns, as was the 248 total return yards he had.

All for naught.

This was, more or less, the unthinkable for the Broncos, who came in on an 11-game winning streak and the odds-on favorite, at 3-1, to win the Super Bowl, in Manning’s hometown of New Orleans, no less.

Instead, this loss goes down with the most devastating in Denver history. Right there with the 30-27 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Jan. 4, 1997 — another year when Denver looked like Super Bowl material.

But it’s Baltimore and Lewis who are in the AFC title game for the second straight year.

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith has been fired, according to NFL.com – he was booted after meeting with upper management this morning. Lovie was with the Bears for nine seasons, making the playoffs three times, including one Super Bowl appearance.

Smith posted an 80-63 regular season mark with the team since 2004, and a 6-3 record in the postseason, had just three losing records in his tenure with the organization — 5-11 in his first season, and two 7-9 seasons.

“Lovie has said there’s pressure every year to win. That’s just a fact of life in the NFL,” team chairman George McCaskey said in July. “We told Phil when he came in that Lovie had to be the coach in 2012. He accepted that condition. We also told him that he would have the freedom to make a change if he thought it was necessary after 2012.”

Greg McElroy, not Mark Sanchez, starting for Jets

(NFL) The New York Jets have announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez will be benched this week against the San Diego Chargers. Greg McElroy, not Tim Tebow, will start.

The Jets sent out the following tweet: “#EA Greg McElroy has been named the Jets starting QB for Sunday’s game with the San Diego Chargers.”

Jets coach Rex Ryan said making the switch is in the best interest of the Jets.

“Thats what I feel in my gut,” Ryan told reporters during a Tuesday conference call. “I like what I saw from Greg vs. Arizona, like what I see on the practice field. I truly believe it is best for our team right now. And that’s how I feel about it.

The 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans was the final straw for Sanchez. He threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball on the Titans 25-yard line to end the final chance at a rally. Sanchez has thrown 13 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and completed just 54.8 percent of his passes this season.

Ryan said he had a lot of conversations before informing Sanchez of his decision Monday night. He didn’t decide on who to start until Tuesday.

“I told Mark we needed to make a change, and he respected my decision,” Ryan said.

This is something that could have happened long ago. Ryan probably feels more comfortable making the change now that the Jets are eliminated from playoff contention.

The bigger news is Tebow was passed over by McElroy, who was inactive vs. the Titans. Tebow was signed during the offseason to be the No. 2 quarterback, and when Sanchez is finally yanked, he’s passed over? That in itself speaks volumes about how the coaching staff views Tebow. McElroy is not the quarterback of the future, so where does that leave the Jets?ACTIVE? Try Dr. Weil's Vitamin Advisor

The Tebow talk was constant throughout the season. It slowed recently with his injury. This will ramp it back up.

The Jets are officially a mess.

Mike Ditka suffers stroke

Former  Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka was hospitalized after suffering a minor stroke on Friday. Ditka says doctors have assured him the stroke was slight, and he told The Chicago Tribune, “I feel good right now and it’s not a big deal.”

“Ditka was at the Bob O’Link golf club in Highland Park when he noticed his hands ‘weren’t working quite right,’ and then he had a problem speaking.” He was then rushed to a suburban hospital for treatment.

‘‘It was a mini-stroke, or whatever you call them,’’ he told sportscaster Mark Giangreco over the phone.

The 73-year-old Ditka had a heart attack during the 1988 season when he was coaching the Bears.

The stroke came on the same day that a Lake County prosecutor said in court that Ditka’s son, Mark E. Ditka, tested positive for opiates during a pretrial screening earlier this month, according to the Tribune. The younger Ditka is awaiting trial on his fourth DUI charge.

The pro football hall of famer career began with the Bears as a player when he was the fifth overall pick in the 1961 draft out of Pittsburgh. He was named rookie of the year, made five straight Pro Bowls, and went on to play for the Eagles and the Cowboys before returning to the Bears as coach in 1982. He took the team to a Super Bowl victory before being fired in 1992 after a losing season.

Alex Karras, former NFL lineman and actor, dies at 77

Los Angeles Times

Alex Karras, an All-Pro defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions who later worked as a “Monday Night Football” co-host and parlayed his hulking strength into a Hollywood acting career, died Wednesday. He was 77.

Karras died at his Los Angeles home, his attorney Craig Mitnick said. Karras had suffered kidney failure days earlier, the latest in a variety of health problems that included dementia and cancer.

He was one of more than 3,500 former NFL players who are suing the league in a dispute over concussion-related injuries.

A dominant fixture on Detroit’s defensive front for 12 seasons, Karras was known to millions for his role as “Mongo,” the monosyllabic, horse-punching brute in the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy “Blazing Saddles.” He later starred in the ABC sitcom “Webster,” which ran from 1983 to 1987.

Although he stood 6 feet 3, the 248-pound Karras was wide enough to be stocky, and he routinely fought his way past blockers at the line of scrimmage to burst into the offensive backfield. He was named to four Pro Bowls, and was also named All-Pro – an even more exclusive honor – four times. The Lions named him to their All-Decade Team for the 1960s.

“While his legacy reached far beyond the gridiron, we always will fondly remember Alex as one of our own and also as one of the best to ever wear the Honolulu Blue and Silver,” Lions President Tom Lewand said a statement released Wednesday.

Karras’ playing career was interrupted by controversy, however. In 1963, the NFL urged him to sell his financial interests in a Detroit bar rumored to be associated with gambling and organized crime. Karras first threatened to retire, then admitted to placing bets on NFL games. He was suspended for one season, along with Green Bay running back Paul Hornung.

Showing an early flair for theatrics, Karras dabbled in pro wrestling during his exile from the NFL, taking on “Dick the Bruiser” – former Packers lineman Dick Afflis – at Olympia Stadium in Detroit.

Associated Press

The early part of that match went according to plan, including Karras punching Afflis in his eye patch, causing fake blood to flow. The two eventually scrapped the script, though, with Afflis grabbing Karras by the throat, pinning him, and later admonishing: “Football players should leave wrestling to wrestlers and go back to their betting.”

When he returned to the Lions in 1964, Karras poked fun at his own reputation, once refusing when a referee asked him to call the pregame coin toss.

“I’m sorry, sir,” Karras said. “I’m not permitted to gamble.”

Born July 15, 1935, in Gary, Ind., Alexander George Karras was the fourth of six children of George and Emmiline Karras, a Greek immigrant doctor and nurse, who lived in an apartment above their medical practice. His brothers Lou and Ted would also become NFL players, although neither was as successful as their younger brother.

Alex played at the University of Iowa, where he won the Outland Trophy as college football’s dominant lineman, and helped the Hawkeyes to victory over Oregon State in the 1957 Rose Bowl.

A first-round draft pick of Detroit in 1958, Karras played with the Lions until 1971, when his contract was terminated because of what team officials called “diminishing athletic prowess.”

“It’s really very sad for most guys,” Karras told the Detroit Free Press about the way football careers often end. “They’ve been playing football all their lives. They’re 31, say, and whack! A knee injury or something and they’re on the street, with no idea how to spend the rest of their lives.”

Karras dabbled in acting during his NFL career, playing himself in the 1968 movie “Paper Lion,” based on George Plimpton’s nonfiction sports book.

When his NFL career ended, Karras moved to Hollywood to pursue acting full time. He made cameo appearances in several popular TV shows, among them “Love, American Style,” “The Odd Couple,” “McMillan & Wife,” and “MASH.”

He worked in the “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth from 1974 to 1976, alongside Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford. Newsweek described Karras as “a gleefully free-spirited amalgam of Babe Ruth, Nathan Detroit and Archie Bunker.”

To some, he is best remembered for his role in “Blazing Saddles,” a role he secured by dressing in ragged clothes and pounding Mongo-style on the front door of the director’s home. Brooks gave him the part on the spot.

One of the movie’s most famous scenes is Mongo flooring a horse with a one-punch knockout. The horse was unharmed.

“I thought it was hilarious, but I didn’t want to hurt that horse at all, believe me,” Karras said in a 2011 interview with the “Sports and Torts” Internet radio show. “I’m not the type of person to do that.”

Karras had parts in other movies, including “Porky’s,” “Victor/Victoria” and “Against All Odds.”

Associated Press

His longest-running role was on TV’s “Webster,” in which he and his real-life wife, Susan Clark, were the adoptive parents of the title character, played by Emmanuel Lewis.

Besides his wife, Karras is survived by their daughter, Katie; his children from a previous marriage, Alex Jr., Peter, Carolyn, George and Renald; five grandchildren and his siblings, Louis, Nan, Paul and Ted.
