Morgan Freeman receives lifetime achievement award

(CBS) Actor Morgan Freeman was honored with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards for his outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment.

While accepting the award, Morgan Freeman said, “If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” And for the 74-year-old celebrated actor, that theory seems to ring true.

Filmmaker Sidney Poitier and actress Helen Mirren were on hand to honor Freeman with the lifetime achievement award, which has previously been given to Robert De Niro, Sean Connery and others.

“Being up here receiving this award, this tribute that you yourself received, makes it clear to me that though they call this the Cecil B. DeMille Award, in my house, it will also be called the Sidney Poitier Award,” Freeman said.

He also had great things to say about Mirren, noting, “I can’t really tell you how it feels to be up here being touted by a woman I love so much.” Morgan then joked, “Working with you on ‘Red’ was great fun … but I learned one thing. Watching you handle a gun makes me know I never want to piss you off.”

Freeman may have received a career achievement honor on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean he’s slowing down anytime soon. Later this year, he’ll appear in the next Batman installment, “The Dark Knight Rises.” He’s currently shooting a new season of his Science Channel series “Through the Wormhole” and is also attached to the upcoming film “Now You See Me” with Woody Harrelson.

Celebrity Quote of the Day: Morgan Freeman on the “Tea Party”

Morgan Freeman on the Tea Party….

“Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What underlines that? ‘Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we can to get this black man outta here.  It is a racist thing, it just shows the weak, dark, underside of America. We’re supposed to be better than that.”

Family and former co-stars, including Matthew McConaughey, celebrate with Morgan Freeman as he receives the 39th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Freeman is one of our most beloved actors, and he’s still going strong. Ten days ago, the American Film Institute honored him with a Life Achievement Award at a ceremony that will air on TV Land tonight at 9 p.m. Certainly, there will be clips of Shawshank, and Driving Miss Daisy, and Unforgiven, and Million Dollar Baby, and Seven, and Glory, and on and on and on. But what is his greatest role? His colleagues were naturally split on the subject, when asked on the red carpet. “Street Smart,” said Samuel L. Jackson. “He was one mean pimp.”
