Madonna says she was being “ironic” in calling Obama a Muslim

By Reuters

Pop star Madonna said on Tuesday she was being deliberately “ironic on stage” when she erroneously referred to President Barack Obama during her concert in the nation’s capital as a “black Muslim.”

A video clip posted on YouTube by audience members at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington captured the 54-year-old singer delivering a rousing, profanity-laced political speech about freedom during her show on Monday.

“Now, it’s so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House … we have a black Muslim in the White House … it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man,” Madonna said.

Obama, campaigning to be re-elected on November 6, is widely known to be a practicing Christian.

Responding to a media furor unleashed by the YouTube video, Madonna issued a statement on Tuesday through her spokeswoman saying her reference to Obama’s religion was facetious.

“I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim – though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?

“The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is – nor should anyone else in America,” she said.

Since Obama’s first presidential run in 2008, fringe groups and a smattering of opponents have espoused rumors that he is secretly a Muslim, similar to persistent but unfounded assertions by some political foes that he was born outside the United States.

Madonna has been outspoken in her support of the president, going so far as to rip off her shirt during recent concerts to reveal the word “OBAMA” inked across her lower back.

On the North American leg of a concert tour in support of her latest studio album, “MDNA,” the singer has been grabbing headlines with a recent series of onstage antics.

During one of her Paris concerts in July, Madonna landed in hot water with France’s far right National Front party after screening footage of party leader Marine Le Pen with a swastika superimposed on her face. The National Front said it would sue the star.

In August, Madonna spoke out at concerts in Russia in support of gay rights and the jailed members of the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot.

Billboard.com recently reported that U.S. officials in Russia had inside knowledge regarding threats of physical violence against performers and spectators at pop star, Madonna’s two concerts this week — one yesterday in Moscow and one tomorrow (August 9) in St. Petersburg. For the most part, however, the Moscow concert went along winningly…. unless you count Madonna’s speech on stage, which was an attempt to support jailed members of Russian punk band, Pussy Riot. While live on stage the Material Girl donned a black ski mask with the group’s name featured on her back — announcing that she’d “pray for them.” The all female group has always made it a point to wear the masks, or balaclavas, which have become a symbol for the group.

Madonna has expressed her support for the jailed members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot by donning a black ski mask and scrawling the group's name on her back. In March, two weeks before Vladimir Putin won Russia's presidency for the third time, members of the female band high-kicked and danced in Moscow's main cathedral, singing "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away!" The three now face years in jail in a case that has outraged human rights groups.

Madonna told The Associated Press earlier during her stay in Moscow that she “hopes that the judge is lenient” with the band members.

Damn Elton! He goes on to say…

“If Madonna had any common sense she would have made a record like Ray of Light and stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and make great pop records, which she does brilliantly,” John added in a back-handed compliment. “But no, she had to go and prove … she looks like a f–king fairground stripper,” he said of the singer, who recently bared her nipple for her audience during a performance.

Madonna Use of Swastika in Concert — a Political Statement?

Madonna recently used a swastika while performing at her concert in France, the image was superimposed over the forehead of Marine Le Pen as part of a montage that also showed Madonna with a Hitler mustache.

In June, Le Pen warned Madonna not to use the image in France after she pulled the same stunt at a concert in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The ‘Like a Virgin’ singer will in fact be sued by France’s National Party for featuring the image.  A spokesman for Le Pen told Rolling Stone Magazine that she did not appreciate the not so subtle comparison and that  a public insult lawsuit will be filed in Paris in a few days.

“We are obliged to react because Marine Le Pen has been accused in a very serious manner,” National Front spokesman Florian Philippot said in an interview with Le JDD. “But what seems to me even more serious is the trivialization of Nazism, of something that is horrible. They are, after all, diffusing images of Hitler during a show to be provocative.”
