Lauryn Hill’s tax evasion sentencing delayed

By Carla B.

Last year Grammy winning singer Lauryn Hill pleaded guilty to willfully failing to file income tax returns with the IRS. Federal prosecutors contend she didn’t pay taxes on more than $1.5 million earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007 from recording and film royalties. She could potentially face a one-year sentence for each of the three evasion charges. Her sentencing was scheduled for today however, U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline C. Arleo in Newark, New Jersey, postponed the hearing today until May 6 after expressing her displeasure with Hill’s failure to keep her promise to make the payment before her sentencing.

“Actions should speak louder than words, and there’s never been any effort made here to pay the taxes,” Arleo said. “I can’t tell you how strongly I feel about this issue.”

Hill’s attorney Nathan Hochman promised that Hill will make the payment by May 3, and that she is arranging $650,000 in real-estate loans. Hochman has asked the judge to sentence Hill to probation, saying she cares for six children and has a long record of charitable contributions.

Hill responded to the tax evasion charges via social media back in 2012:

“Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual,” Hill wrote. “I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.”

Hip hop icon Lauryn Hill is reportedly facing an eviction from her New Jersey mansion, which was first reported by  TMZ.  A public record search of Essex County Court unearthed a tenancy case filed against Hill on March 5th by the owners of the home. There’s also a lawsuit pending against both Hill and her landlords by the town of South Orange for allegedly running a business out of a home, which is a violation of town zoning ordinances.

On top of this very unfortunate situation the singer is also dealing with tax evasion charges. Last year Hill pleaded guilty to willfully failing to file income tax returns with the IRS. Federal prosecutors contend she didn’t pay taxes on more than $1.5 million earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007 from recording and film royalties. She could potentially face a one-year sentence for each of the three evasion charges.

Her sentencing is scheduled for Monday April 22nd.

Death and Taxes: Wesley Snipes and other Celebs that paid royally – EOTM Media

By Carla B. – Follow us: @eotmpr on Twitter |eotm.media on Facebook

“Why can’t celebrities pay their taxes like the rest of us?”

On April 2nd actor/entrepreneur Wesley Snipes was released from a federal prison and transferred to the New York Community Corrections Office where he will be confined to house arrest until July 19th. TMZ was the first to break the story.

Wesley Snipes - Photo credit: Wikipedia/Getty

In 2006 Snipes was convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns in 2008 and began serving his sentence in 2010.

The Vampire Slayer belonged to a group that challenged the government’s right to collect taxes. Prosecutors argued he failed to file returns for at least a decade and owed over 17 million dollars in back taxes.

While some celebrities engage in various attempts to avoid paying taxes, from filing false returns to hiding money overseas, regardless of the method or fame of the individual, the government can force those guilty of tax fraud to pay back taxes and penalties, and serve time in confinement—a costly lesson for an avoidable mistake.

Other celebrities that paid royally to Uncle Sam

1. Martha Stewart: Stewart was forced to pay $220,000 in back taxes and penalties to the State of New York.

2. Ja Rule: Multi-platinum selling rap artist Ja Rule failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million that he earned between 2004 and 2006 while living in Saddle River, NJ.  He pleaded guilty to three counts of unfiled taxes, admitting he hadn’t filed for five years, according to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. The rapper was sentenced to two years in prison. The hip hop star told a federal judge that he had received bad financial advice and had trouble coping with fame.

3. Lauryn Hill: Next up is hip hop icon Lauryn Hill who just happens to reside in the Garden State of New Jersey. In 2012 the grammy-winning singer pleaded guilty in federal court, to three counts of failing to file federal income tax returns. Hill pleaded guilty to failing to file federal returns between 2005 and 2007, despite earning an income of more than $1.8 million. Each count carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

4. Willie Nelson: After seizing most of his assets in 1990, the federal government forced Willie to pay over $16 million in back taxes and fines for his involvement with a bogus tax shelter.

5. Nicolas Cage: According to the IRS, in 2009 Cage owed approximately $6 million in back taxes. The actor accused his ex-manager and accountant of making poor investment choices.

6. Marc Anthony: In 2007, the IRS served Anthony with $2.5 million in back tax bills. Then in 2010, he received two additional bills totaling over $3 million for unpaid taxes on real estate. Marc Anthony also blamed management.

7. Heidi Fleiss: Known as “The Hollywood Madam,” Fleiss ran a prostitution ring during the early 1990s. Although she never named names, her business attracted clients who were well-known and well-off. Ultimately, she was arrested in June 1993. Fleiss was convicted of federal tax evasion charges, which carried a seven-year prison sentence.
Suitauthority.com
8. Pete Rose: Rose made his name with the Cincinnati Reds, first as a player and later as a manager. Despite his many on-field accomplishments the Baseball icon was caught gambling on games, including those played by his own team. He was sentenced to five months in prison and fined $50,000 for tax evasion, according to The Associated Press.

9. Martha Stewart: The savvy business woman accumulated a $220,000 tax debt for not paying taxes on her East Hampton, New York, home, which she claimed she spent very little time at and therefore thought she didn’t need to pay taxes on. She was sentenced to five months in prison and five months of home confinement. Stewart was also fined $30,000.

Death and taxes may be equally inevitable, but Uncle Sam demands the last word.

Kanye West, Uh Duh… He’s Not God…

‘I Am A God’: Kanye West Song Name Mistaken For Album Title

The rumor mill was a buzz today spouting rapper Kanye Westwas working on an album titled “I Am God.” I was just shocked an appalled to find out he wan’t God. [Shruggs]

I dunno maybe I am the only one to remember a song that happened in the not so distant past when West released the song about Jesus walking. He also recreated the prophet’s crucifixion on a 2006 cover of Rolling Stone…go figure. This was a pretty good publicity stunt, I might add.

Kanye West - Photo credit: AKM-GSI

Let’s not forget the rappers habit of being a little over the top and this new track…well…. definitely seemed on point, however, according to the Huffington Post, the title is actually for an upcoming single and the album itself had yet to be named. The track will be called “I Am A God” [Hmmm....title of album, song..same difference...shrugs....anyways...]

Kanye’s camp has went on record to say:

“We would never be so presumptuous or sacrilegious to call ourselves the supreme being,” the source said. While everyone will have to wait for the actual song to parse the specifics of the song’s message, the source hinted that the idea was generally that all people are manifestations of a higher power.

And according to the Huffington Post  entertainment blog the title is also a reference to Psalm 82, which includes the following:

I said, “You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”

This is a great publicity stunt, I might add. Oh and again….we can’t forget the eccentric rapper has rapped about Jesus walking and also recreated the prophet’s crucifixion on a 2006 cover of Rolling Stone…go figure.

“I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal,” he said. “I was a young man who made a lot of money — I’m getting a little choked up — I didn’t know how to deal with these finances, and I didn’t have people to guide me, so I made mistakes.”

Debi Austin, Anti-Smoking Advocate Dead at 62

Published by EOTM News Editor on February 28th, 2013 - in Breaking News

Via Los Angeles Times

Deborah “Debi” Austin, a Californian who became a symbol of the anti-smoking movement for her powerful role in advocacy and education, died last week. She was 62.

Tobacco educator and motivational speaker Debi Austin comments on the negative effects of tobacco during a news conference unveiling a series of anti-tobacco television advertisements today by the California Department of Public Health at the California Endowment Center for Healthy Communities in Los Angeles on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

Austin, of Canoga Park, is perhaps best known for her role in a public-awareness television ad in the mid-1990s and later spots she filmed after being diagnosed with cancer of the larynx and receiving a laryngectomy.

“They say nicotine isn’t addictive,” Austin says in one ad, taking a drag of her smoke. “How can they say that?”

Her raspy voice, poised demeanor in the face of adversity, and dark hole in her throat are unforgettable.

In recent years, Austin continued filming advertisements for anti-smoking groups and died Friday after a two-decade bout with cancer, according to a statement from her family.

“True to Debi’s spirit, she was a fighter to the end and leaves a big hole in our hearts and lives. Debi will be remembered fondly by those who know her to be caring, courageous, very funny and always there to offer advice or lend a hand,” according to a statement provided by the family.

“She was passionate and outspoken about what she believed in and deeply touched all who knew her or heard her story.”

Austin started smoking when she was a teenager and remained a two- to three-pack-a-day smoker until she finally quit.

In a statement on the state Department of Public Health’s website, officials called Austin California’s “most well-known anti-tobacco advocate” and that the advertisement “Voicebox” is “the most-recognized and talked about California tobacco control ad.”

“We are saddened by Debi’s death. She exemplified the real toll tobacco takes on a person’s body,” Dr. Ron Chapman of the agency said in the statement.

“Debi was a pioneer in the fight against tobacco and showed tremendous courage by sharing her story to educate Californians on the dangers of smoking. She was an inspiration for Californians to quit smoking and also influenced countless others not to start,” Chapman said.

2013 EOTM Awards Host – Viewers Choice

EOTM Media is gearing up for the 2013 EOTM Awards but they are missing one major component — a host.

The EOTM’s have recently announced they are “looking for the perfect celebrity that will steer their inaugural awards show into prime time heaven.”

And according to Carla B., Executive Director of the production, “the ideal entertainer can not be just any ole celebrity, our bar is extremely high.”

“To be a successful EOTM Awards host, wit is an absolute must. Comedians do generally well considering it’s their job to be funny however, it has to be right, not too edgy, not too raw. Our host’s sense of humor must be softer…somewhat subtle. It must be more inward-directed, since those who are the targets of ‘their’ humor have very large, yet tender egos,” she continued.

Below is a list of qualities the 2013 EOTM Awards host must have:

1. Sense of humor (self-deprecating a plus)
2. Good-Looking
3. Shameless self-marketing
4. Able to Roll with the punches
5. Have fun (or at least look like it)
6. Have done Roasts
7. From Adam Sandler and beyond

We thought it would be pretty cool to get everyone involved in this? Know of anyone that fits the bill? Who should we choose?
