CNN is reportedly trying to acquire NBC’s Ann Curry to feature in its top news hour. Forbes.com has reported that Jeff Zucker, once the Today Show’s executive producer and former head of NBC/Universal, is trying to replace Anderson Cooper with Curry in its coveted 8 p.m. time slot.

As reported by Daily Mail, Zucker is taking over as president for CNN.

In the midst of all this, Curry has allegedly begged NBC to set her free. If her wish is granted she will occupy Cooper’s prime-time slot; rumor has it the network is on a ratings decline.

‘Ann wants out of her contract, big time,’ a source close to the situation told RadarOnline. ‘She has formally asked her attorney to explore exit options from the network.’

“Ann’s lawyer feels that there is a very strong case to be made that NBC has breached terms of the deal because Curry was demoted from TODAY. Furthermore, Ann has basically been sequestered from appearing on the network. Yes, she has been doing some work that has been assigned to her, but it hasn’t been steady,” the insider added.

If NBC does not let her out of her contract and she still decides to bail, it could become very bad for Curry professionally. She could be barred from being hired in any journalist position for two years.

What are your thoughts? Should Ann Curry beg NBC or ride things out?

Curry out as co-host of NBC’s ‘Today’ show

Published by EOTM News Editor on June 28th, 2012 - in Breaking News, Entertainment News

NEW YORK (AP) — Ann Curry offered a tearful goodbye as co-host of NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday, saying, “This is not as I expected to ever leave this couch.”

Her exit represents NBC’s most visible response to the popular morning show’s worst stretch in the ratings in nearly two decades. “Today” hadn’t lost a single week since 1996, but this spring it was beaten four times by ABC’s resurgent “Good Morning America.”

Curry’s exit marked a stark contrast to the lengthy tribute shows given to predecessors Meredith Vieira and Katie Couric. She announced it during the final five minutes of her shift, ending a week of awkward television as she continued working after word spread that NBC was looking to oust her.

“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line but, man, I did try,” she said, breaking down.

Curry joined the show as a news anchor in 1997. Passed over for the co-host job when Vieira replaced Couric, she was given the chance when Vieira left last June. But her pairing with co-host Matt Lauer never seemed to click and she took the fall for the show’s ratings troubles.

NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, who co-hosts the 9 a.m. segment of the show, is expected to replace Curry.

Curry will remain at NBC News, saying she’s been given a “fancy new title” to lead a reporting team. NBC said she will be anchor-at-large and national and international correspondent. Her work will occasionally resurface on “Today,” and Lauer said she will be in London with the show for the Olympics.

He sat next to Curry, Al Roker and Natalie Morales on the couch as Curry choked back tears and apologized for being a “sob sister.”

“It’s not goodbye, not by a long shot,” a grim-faced Lauer said.

Each of her colleagues recalled some of Curry’s reporting from her “Today” tenure, but there was no video tribute. The “Today” website displayed “15 top Ann moments spanning her 15 years on TV,” asking viewers to vote on their favorite.

“To all of you watching, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours,” she said.

Curry is reportedly getting at least $10 million to leave “Today,” the nation’s No. 1 morning show — an from the looks of it she’s ‘Okay to Go.’

The New York Daily News calls a potential Gifford-Philibin reunion a “bad idea” but notes that the reunion may be the only way to divert audiences’ attention away from the uncomfortable dismissal of Curry while a replacement is being named.

Curry has said nothing about the gossip and NBC has not made any official comments. A call to her representative, Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, was not returned.

Earlier this year, “Today” show executive producer Jim Bell offered Curry a tepid endorsement, telling Show Tracker the network had “no plans” to replace her.

Don’t fret just yet, Curry is still the co-host, but speculation continues to mount over who will be sitting in her anchor seat in the not too distant future.

So why all the humbug?

The short answer: Ratings. “Today” was the undisputed leader in the morning-show wars since the mid-1990s. But since Curry, the former news reader, took over for Meredith Vieira a year ago, the program has been struggling to maintain a lead over its rival, ABC’s”Good Morning America.”

“Good Morning America” has pulled out weekly ratings wins over the last year.

News that Curry was being replaced broke Wednesday. A New York Times report surfaced that secret meetings had been taking place between NBC and her lawyer to push her into a different role.

Regardless of what position she ends up with, she will end up with a nice financial cushion to ease the fall. NBC signed her to  a three year deal, worth  $10 million annually when she took the co-anchor post in 2011, TMZ reported.
