Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj leaving ‘American Idol’

(Reuters) – Pop singer Mariah Carey and rapper Nicki Minaj will leave “American Idol” after just one season as judges on the singing contest show, following on the heels of longtime judge Randy Jackson who left amid a TV ratings slump.

“Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!!” Minaj said on her Twitter page on Wednesday.

Randy Jackson (C) is embraced by Mariah Carey (L) and Nicki Minaj (R) as he finishes his final season as a judge during the Season 12 finale of "American Idol" in Los Angeles in this May 16, 2013 file photo.

Carey’s departure was also announced on Twitter by her public relations firm PMK BNC, which said the singer “says goodbye 2 idol” as she prepared to embark on a world tour.

Carey, 43, joined the judging panel with Minaj, country singer Keith Urban and Jackson, a music producer, for the show’s 12th season.

Carey reportedly earned $18 million while Minaj’s salary was reported to be $12 million and Urban’s was at $8 million for the season.

Carey and Minaj, 30, grabbed headlines throughout the season for their on-camera arguments and off-camera feuding, with Carey saying in January that she had hired extra security following threats reportedly made against her by Minaj.

Despite the added star power of Carey, Minaj and Urban, the show’s ratings slumped to the lowest in 12 seasons, with the May 16 season finale of “Idol” drawing 14.2 million to see vocal powerhouse Candice Glover win the competition.

Fox released statements following the announcements of both judges.

“Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the ‘American Idol’ contestants this season,” Fox said.

“Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to ‘American Idol’” and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best,” the network added after Minaj’s announcement.

Jackson announced this month he would not return to the show next season. It was unclear whether Urban would.

Pop singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler left “Idol” in 2012 after two seasons and used their increased visibility from the show to relaunch their music careers.

Fox, which is owned by News Corp, will also lose reality programming chief Mike Darnell, who said last week he would leave at the end of June. Darnell shepherded “American Idol” into a ratings juggernaut since its debut in 2002.

However, the network and the show’s producers say the Kardashian report is premature. “The producers have not yet made the talent decisions for this year,” an X Factor rep said in statement.

All this sounds very familiar …it was less than three months ago when they said the same thing about Britney Spears. [shrugs]

Remember this guy ‘Corey Clark’ well he’s back and suing ‘American Idol’ for racism

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 27th, 2013 - in Breaking News, Entertainment News, Music News, Reality TV

And this time he has brought back up. (No pun intended)

Former American Idol contestant Corey Clark is suing the popular reality show for racism and it seems he has been busy, recruiting — because there are 8 other past Idol contestants that have jumped on his bandwagon, this according to Attorney James Freeman.

Michel Boutefeu/Getty Images

Clark is well known for his highly-publicized disqualification from the second season of American Idol and later allegations of a sexual relationship between him and then-Idol judge, Paula Abdul.

During the show it was revealed that Clark had been arrested at his Topeka, Kansas home on October 12, 2002, after neighbors called police after hearing a commotion within the residence, including a girl yelling. Police arrived and questioned Clark and his 15-year-old sister Alysha, after which Clark became confrontational with the officers. Clark alleges police misconduct in handling the matter, asserting that he was beaten by the officers, who ultimately wrestled Clark to the pavement and handcuffed him behind his back. After managing to get his handcuffed hands in front of him in the squad car, he was shown a taser and warned he would be shot with it if he continued to resist, at which point he relented. He was charged with misdemeanor battery on four police officers and his sister, and endangering the welfare of a child. However both Clark and his sister Alysha have denied that he ever hit her, and Alysha echoed her brother’s account of the way the situation transpired.

In 2012 Clark attempted to sue MTV for $40 million for covering the drama back in 2003. MTV News and former correspondent and “American Idol Expert” Jim Cantiello were among the media outlets covering Clark’s exit from the show.

According to E! News, they obtained a copy of the lawsuit filed by Clark back in 2012 in which he says MTV practiced “yellow journalism” and published “a continuous, one-sided stream of defamatory material” about him.

As to the 2013 lawsuit Freeman says “the show has been juicing-up the drama by publically revealing that some black contestants have arrest records – and then using that as an excuse to boot them off the show”. He recently submitted a letter to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asking for permission to sue the show on behalf of nine humiliated African-American contestants – all of them male.

American Idol’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe called the allegations ‘ridiculous.’ ‘We treat everybody the same … no matter the race, religion or sex,’ he said.
Freeman’s other past idol clients are Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju’Not Joyner (Season 8), Chris Golightly (Season 9), and twin brothers Terrell and Derrell Brittenum (Season 5)To recap on past American Idol winners that are black; we have Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks and Ruben Studdard.
Notably, Ramdy Jackson was a judge Randy Jackson — and he’s black and we can’t forget the unforgettable, Nicki Minaj.

Reality TV: American Idol ratings fall 19 percent

Published by EOTM News Editor on January 19th, 2013 - in Breaking News, Entertainment News, Reality TV

2013 Grammy Nominees On Sale Now at fye.com While Supplies LastIn a turn of events that Simon Cowell surely hadn’t predicted — Reality TV show “American Idol” ratings fell by 19 percent. And more shocking…the ratings declined after Wednesday night’s big premiere. We hate to say “only” and 17.8 million viewers in the same sentence, but according to Nielsen this is not a good look.

As we sit and ponder over the numbers we can only speculate that the feud between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey was a factor.

“People wonder if the fight was faked to get people talking about the new season,” one insider at Fox told E! News. “It was not fake. And when the video came out, there was a lot of concern among Fox execs that there could be impact on the ratings. The judges need to be likable.”

Idol judge Minaj was however overly optimistic,  in a statement to E! the rapper said, “I feel like we jell well in a weird crazy way.”

Fox executives also noted that “Idol” beat the 2012 September premiere of NBC singing show rival “The Voice” by 46 percent in total viewers.

Singers Carey, Minaj and country artist Keith Urban joined the show as judges after Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler left last year.

Kelly Clarkson To Marry Reba McEntire’s Stepson

American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson is getting married! The singer is engaged to Brandon Blackstock, Reba McEntire’s stepson. Brandon, a talent manager and also the son of Clarkson’s own manager Narvel Blackstock, the two started dating a year ago.

Blackstock proposed to Clarkson on December 14 and the superstar couldn’t wait to share the news on  Twitter.

“I’M ENGAGED!!!!! I wanted y’all to know!! Happiest night of my life last night! I am so lucky and am with the greatest man ever,” Clarkson tweeted.

There are no wedding plans in the works just yet, but Clarkson did tell DeGeneres in a November interview that she was stoked about eloping, so an impromptu wedding may be in the cards. If that’s what the 30-year-old singer wants, I’m betting that’s what she will get. Still, Pop Blend would like to wish the couple the best as they move forward in the wedding process.

Congrats to the adorable couple!

J.Lo Denies Getting Hotel Maid Fired

(Reality TV Magazine) It seems that last week was a bad week for hotel maid Pray Dodaj. It seems that asking for Jennifer Lopez‘s autograph cost Pray her job. The maid was under the impression that the former American Idol judge complained about being disturbed, and got Pray canned. Jennifer Lopez has taken to twitter to defend her honor!

Photo credit: Wynn - Jennifer Lopez

When Pray Dodaj heard that Jennifer Lopez was rooming at her place of employment, the Melia Dusseldorf in Germany, she thought she may get a chance to meet or see the star.  She dished her experience to a local German newspaper, saying “I cleaned on her floor, and I am an incredibly big fan so I took all my courage and rang the bell to get an autograph. But I was rejected by two assistants at the door.  A day later the cleaning company that employed me at the hotel called and said that Ms Lopez had complained.  I was fired right there on the phone. Because of an autograph.’  Ouch!

When major media outlets inquired about the event to the hotel, the director, Cyrus Heydarian, says that he stands by his decision, saying, firmly, that he doesn’t tolerate employees who disrupt his guests.  “She has acted contrary to the contractual arrangements and disturbed the privacy of our guests.”

When J-Lo got wind of this, she took to Twitter to clear the air.  “C’mon thought you knew me better than this. Would never get anyone fired over an autograph. 1st I heard of this was on twitter. #hurtful”

We know that some stars don’t mind giving autographs, and some do, but Jennifer seems to be incredibly friendly to her fans, so I believe that the hotel director was trying to shift some blame off of himself and the hotel when axing Pray.  What do you think?  We’re betting Jennifer will be sending her an autograph today!
