Rihanna says Adele’s music is ‘depressing’

By Us Weekly

Though she’s been collaborating — and hooking up — with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna is still very much a single lady — and she isn’t particularly happy about it.

During an appearance on the UK’s “Jonathan Ross Show,” the “We Found Love” singer, 24, told the host she thinks single life is “so overrated.”

Getty Images

“I have such incredible experiences in my life,” Rihanna told Ross. “But…you want to share your life with someone. That’s what I’m missing right now.”

The busy star admitted she’s not making a huge effort to put herself out there, but added that she’d be thrilled if the right guy came along. Her type? “Somebody cool, fun, [and] funny,” she shared.

During the interview, Rihanna also dished about a recent encounter that left her starstruck: meeting Adele during the Grammy Awards. “I love her,” Rihanna exclaimed. “I’m a big fan … Her last album, “21,” spoke to me so much.”

In fact, Rihanna says the soul singer’s heartbreaking lyrics struck too much of a chord with her — and eventually, she had to give herself a break from the album of the year. “I feel like everyone in the world identified with [21], to the point that I had to stop listening because it was depressing me so much. If you identify with it, sometimes you don’t want to hear about it.”

Adele flips off producers at Brit Awards

Published by EOTM News Editor on February 22nd, 2012 - in Breaking News, Celebrity News, Music, Music News

(CBS/AP) LONDON – Adele, fresh from her six Grammy wins last weekend, walked away a winner once again at Tuesday’s Brit Awards for music, taking prizes for album of the year and best British female solo artist before making an obscene gesture after the show’s host cut her acceptance speech short.

Credit: AP

“I’m so, so proud to be British and to be flying our flag,” she was saying when the show’s host, actor James Corden, cut off her second acceptance speech, prompting the singer to make a rude middle-finger gesture in frustration.

She stressed afterward that it was aimed at industry leaders, not her fans.

“I’m sorry if I offended anyone but it was the suits that offended me,” Adele said. “Thank you all very much and thanks to my fans. I don’t want them to think I was swearing at them.”

The show’s broadcaster, ITV, issued a statement apologizing to Adele for cutting her off.

“We regret this happened and we send deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short tonight due to the live show over-running,” ITV said.

The 23-year-old singer, who had to undergo vocal cord surgery in November, also delivered a powerhouse performance of her single “Rolling in the Deep” to thousands of fans and industry insiders at London’s O2 arena.

“It’s been an amazing year,” Adele said as she received the female artist statuette from petite pop star Kylie Minogue.

“I feel like a drag queen next to you,” joked the winner, who wore a sleek black Burberry gown but towered over Minogue. She thanked her record company “for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be.”

Adele lost out on the British single prize to boy band One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” but took the coveted album of the year award for “21.” The statue was presented by singer George Michael, returning to the stage after suffering life-threatening pneumonia in December.

Teen-friendly English troubadour Ed Sheeran won two trophies, including British male solo artist, at an energetic ceremony in London, and tousle-haired singer-songwriter Sheeran won prizes for solo artist and British breakthrough act.

The ceremony also included tributes to Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse.

Tuesday’s event – which kicked off with Coldplay performing “Charlie Brown” and included live turns from Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Noel Gallagher, Bruno Mars and Rihanna – brought out a host of stars who blended rock ‘n’ roll attitude and fashion finery.

Blur frontman Damon Albarn dressed down for the red carpet in jeans and a flat cap, and former Oasis guitarist Gallagher wore a leather jacket. But others struck a snazzier note. Actor Ray Winstone arrived in a pinstriped three-piece suit, complete with watch chain.

Style standouts included Minogue, in a strapless sky blue dress; plump-lipped Internet sensation Lana Del Rey, wearing a floor-length red gown; and Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch, in a lacy peach dress by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

Coldplay won their fourth best British group trophy, while Foo Fighters were voted best international group. Bruno Mars took the prize for international male solo artist, and Rihanna won the international female prize for a second year.

The Barbadian singer, who has often been in the news for non-musical reasons since her then-boyfriend Chris Brown attacked her at a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009, thanked her fans.

“At times when I feel misunderstood, my fans always remind me that it’s OK to be myself,” she said.

Lana Del Rey appeared moved to be named international breakthrough act.

“This award means much more to me than you know,” said the singer, who has gone from Internet-fueled buzz to backlash in record time after a disastrous performance last month on “Saturday Night Live.”

Britpop icons Blur received a special prize for their contribution to music.

The four original members – Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree – performed together for the first time since a series of concerts in 2009, offering versions of 1990s hits including “Girls & Boys” and “Parklife.”

Most of the awards are chosen by more than 1,000 musicians, critics and record industry figures, with several decided by public vote.

Grammys 2012: Adele wins Best Pop Solo

Grammys 2012: Chris Brown wins Best R&B Album.

Getty Images

With the unfortunate passing of Whitney Houston casting a dark cloud over the 2012 Grammy Awards, many of tonight’s stars have decided, it is business as usual. If the first 25 minutes of the 54th Grammy Awards were relatively restrained, that all went by the wayside when Chris Brown performed two songs. Brown has had success in the last year, but he’s still in the midst of serving five years probation for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Considering the incident happened hours before the Grammy Awards three years ago, this all seemed too much too soon.

It was hilarious…to say the least. Running around the stage, one outfitted with light-boxes, Brown and his dancers seemed ridiculous in their high turtlenecks that look like gas masks. For anyone who thought this would be a more elegant Grammys, Brown made it clear they won’t be. Worse, he’ll be back later in the show, but who wouldn’t have rather have heard an extended tribute to Whitney Houston, or even Amy Winehouse, rather than this?

Far more fascinating, however, was the fact that Kanye West was not in the building. His co-winner Jay-Z is a new father and has a more than valid excuse to stay home, but West has made it clear that the Grammys are a big deal to him. He had the most nominations this year, with seven, although his nods were all confined to the rap categories.

Now, let’s get back to Adele, the British songstress hit the 2012 Grammys red carpet looking more glamorous than she’s ever looked before.

For her major red carpet moment (she’s predicted to win big, nominated in six categories), Adele chose a custom Giorgio Armani gown featuring sequined ring-designs with black mesh overlay and a grosgrain panel on the front.

To complete her simple yet high-wattage look, she debuted shorter, blonder hair styled into soft, old Hollywood-style waves and a bright red lip to match.

The first award of the broadcast, Best Pop Solo Performance, went to Adele’s “Someone Like You,” the British singer’s second win of the evening. (He “21″ picked up Best Pop Vocal Album during the afternoon pre-telecast portion of the awards, while her “Rolling in the Deep” producer Paul Epworth picked up Producer of the Year.)

“My life changed when I wrote this song, before anyone even heard it,” she said, looking into the crowd for co-writer Dan Wilson.

“Since this is a vocal award, I want to thank my doctors, they brought my voice back,” she added, showing no signs of the strain that caused her to undergo vocal cord surgery.

On another note: Chris Brown performs and wins best R&B album.

When the stage lit up, Brown stood atop a collection of colorful blocks that at times resembled the 1980s arcade game “Q-Bert.” The electric-tuned, Underdogs-produced single filled Staples Center, as Brown, who was dressed in a white and gray varsity jacket, white pants and sparkling sneaks, kick-stepped up and down multiple levels of the high-rising stage prop.

As the beat built, the blocks went from red to blue to yellow and green with building intensity before Brown switched gears and went into the more familiar dance single “Beautiful People” from last year’s F.A.M.E. LP. The pop star got a bit daring, jumping across the structure while his backup dancers, who wore oversize winged ponchos, followed suit in a high-flying routine.

Adele’s ’21′ – Biggest No. 1 Album Since ‘Bodyguard’

(Billboard) It seems that every week, there is a new Adele-related accolade to tout.

And this week is no different, as her “21″ album hits its 17th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (95,000; down 9%). “21″ has been No. 1 longer than any other album since “The Bodyguard” soundtrack wrapped a 20-week run at No. 1 on the chart dated May 29, 1993.

Could “21″ hold on another week at the top? That all depends on how new albums from Tim McGraw (“Emotional Traffic”), Celtic Woman (“Believe”) and Kellie Pickler (“100 Proof”) — among others — sell this week. Also new to market: the “2012 Grammy Nominees” compilation.

Elsewhere on this week’s chart, the “Kidz Bop 21″ album debuts at No. 2 with 59,000 sold. That entry grants the long-running series its 14th top 10 set and fourth to reach the runner-up slot. (The “Kidz” have yet to claim a No. 1 set on the Billboard 200.) The last “Kidz” set — “Kidz Bop 20″ — started at No. 2 as well, with 69,000 sold on the chart dated Aug. 6, 2011.

TurboTax is Easy, Free Edition, Fast Refund

The second-highest debut arrives at No. 7 by James Fortune & FIYA, who sees its “Identity” land with 18,000. It’s the best sales week and highest charting album for the gospel singer — who also debuts at No. 1 on the Gospel Albums chart. On the latter tally, it’s his first leader after reaching No. 2 twice previously.

As for the rest of the top 10 this week, the Black Keys‘ “El Camino” holds at No. 3 (29,000; down 20%) while Drake‘s “Take Care” is also stationary at No. 4 (29,000; down 8%). (Only a couple hundred sales separate the two titles this week.)

Rihanna‘s “Talk That Talk” is up two slots to No. 5 (20,000; down 8%), Young Jeezy‘s “TM103: Hustlerz Ambition” is steady at No. 6 (19,000; down 19%), and Toby Keith‘s “Clancy’s Tavern” zooms 22-8 with 17,000 (up 27%). The latter album’s physical CD was sale priced for just $4.99 at Target stores last week. Also only $4.99 last week: George Strait‘s “Icon” greatest hits (118-66 with 6,000; up 63%) and Le’Andria Johnson‘s “The Awakening of Le’Andria Johnson” (174-79 with 5,000; up 78%).

Rounding out the top 10 are Coldplay‘s “Mylo Xyloto” (moving 8-9 with 17,000; down 13%) and Nickelback‘s “Here and Now” (falling 9-10 with just under 17,000; down 13%).

Right outside the top 10 is the third biggest entry of the week, as Attack Attack’s “This Means War” bows at No. 11 (17,000). Right behind that is the surging “Joyful Noise” soundtrack, which zips 21-12 with a bit under 17,000 (up 23%).

On the Digital Songs chart, David Guetta‘s “Turn Me On,” featuring Nicki Minaj, blasts from No. 7 to No. 1, selling 198,000 downloads (up a whopping 44%). It’s the first No. 1 on the Digital tally for either artist, and should bode well for the song’s fortunes on the overall Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. (News on the latter list will be released later on Wednesday.)

Last week’s No. 1, Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain,” slips to No. 2 with 185,000 (down 4%). Right behind her is a hard-charging Kelly Clarkson, which sees her “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” fly 11-3 with 175,000 sold (up 48%).

Tyga‘s “Rack City” falls one spot to No. 4 (148,000; down 11%), Flo Rida‘s “Good Feeling” slips 2-5 with 142,000 (down 21%) and Rihanna’s “We Found Love” holds at No. 6 with 140,000 (up less than 1%). LMFAO‘s “Sexy and I Know It” slides three rungs to No. 7 (134,000; down 14%), Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa‘s “Young, Wild & Free” drops three to No. 8 (134,000; down 11%) and Jessie J‘s “Domino” hits the top 10 for the first time, climbing 16-9 (122,000; up 25%). Closing out the top 10 is Katy Perry‘s “The One That Got Away,” which returns to the top 10, rising 14-10 with 117,000 sold (up 9%). The latte benefits from an acoustic version of the song, which was released to digital retailers on Jan. 16.

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 22) totaled 5.01 million units, down 1% compared to the sum last week (5.10 million) and down 4% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.25 million). Year to date album sales stand at 15.95 million, up 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (15.54 million).

Digital track sales this past week totaled 27.89 million downloads, down 2% compared to last week (28.56 million) and up 6% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (26.38 million). Year to date track sales are at 89.21 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (83.60 million).

Next week’s Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Amos Lee‘s “Mission Bell” rang the bell at No. 1, debuting with 40,000. Iron & Wine‘s “Kiss Each Other Clean” started in the runner-up slot with 39,000. The previous week’s No. 1, the Decemberists‘ “The King Is Dead,” fell to No. 10 with 29,000 (down 69%).

2012 Grammy Nominations

2012 Grammy nominations: Adele, Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Foo Fighters lead the musical pack.

Kanye West earned the most nominations for this year’s Grammys (a whopping 7).

But in the categories that count — Album, Song and Record of the Year — it’s two other stars who have a chance to sweep.

To the surprise of no one, the year’s biggest selling artist, Adele, bagged nods in all the top slots: Song and Record for her smash “Rolling In The Deep,” and Album for her second CD, “21.”

Adele bagged six Grammy nominations total.

The British singer earned six nods in all.

She’ll go head to head with a less obvious, or favored, candidate: Bruno Mars, who tied her tally with six bids, including the Record and Song slots for “Grenade,” and Album for his debut, “Doo-Wops and Hooligans.”

Both stars represent a resurgence of pure singing chops in an age of theatrics and gimmickry.

The Foo Fighters — seen by many as the last popular gasp for respected rock — also got six nods (though just one in a top category: Album of the Year).

Rapper Lil Wayne and the dance music producer Skrillex, each got five, all in lesser genre slots. Similarly, West’s large tally includes just one in a major category: Song of the Year for “All Of The Lights,” from his album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

Lady Gaga, a star expected to have as high a profile as Adele, only has one chance to compete in a pivotal slot: Album for “Born This Way.”

Other artists vying for the most prized awards include the neo-folk act Mumford & Songs, whose “The Cave” is up for Record and Song of the year, Katy Perry, with a bid in the Record slot for “Firework,” Rihanna, who’s in Album contention for “Loud,” and this year’s left-field choice, Bon Iver, nominated for both Record and Song with “Holocene.”

Bon Iver, this year’s token hipster group, also has a shot as Best New Artist (though it’s for their second CD). In that lusted-after category, they’ll square off against country’s The Band Perry, dance king Skrillex, rapper-singer J. Cole and the odds-on favorite to win — sight gag and New Yorker Nicki Minaj. The most glaring oversight in this category was breakout alterna-band Foster The People.

This year’s Grammys has earned considerable controversy for hacking down its list of over 100 categories to feature just 78, at the expense of many Latin artists.

An on-going protest about that will surely continue when the awards are handed out, Feb. 12, 2012 on CBS.

Adele Nominated for 2011 Mercury Prize

Soulful singer-songwriter Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, known as Adele was among 12 artists nominated yesterday for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

She was the first recipient of the BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice and was named the number-one predicted breakthrough act of 2008 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2008. At the 2009 Grammy Awards, she won the awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Considered the most prestigious music award in the United Kingdom, the Barclaycard Mercury Prize is given each year to the best British or Irish act and the winner is chosen by a small group of journalists and music industry professionals.

Also nominated are Anna Calvi, Everything Everything, Ghostpoet, Katy B, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins, Metronomy and Gwilym Simcock. The winner of the $32,800 prize will be announced during a televised show on Sept. 6, during which the nominees also perform.

Adele attracted the attention of XL Recordings for being the first plus-sized singer they had ever signed. Since her debut, 19, Adele has received much recognition both commercially and critically. The album debuted at number one, and has been certified four times platinum in the UK. Her career in the US was boosted by a viewer record–breaking Saturday Night Live episode in late 2008. Adele released her second album 21 on 24 January 2011 in the UK, and 22 February in the US.
