‘Different World’ actor Lou Myers dies

Lou Myers, best known for his role as Mr. Gaines on the television series “A Different World,” has died, he was 77.

Tonia McDonald of Myers’ nonprofit, Global Business Incubation Inc., said Myers died Tuesday night at Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia.

The actor had been in and out of the hospital since before Christmas and collapsed recently according to McDonald.

His TV credits included “NYPD Blue,” “E.R.,” “The Cosby Show,” “Touched by an Angel,” and more. He also appeared in a number of films, including “Tin Cup,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Wedding Planner” and of course “A Different World” which ran from 1987-93.

Myers also appeared on Broadway including “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” African American Style and “Oprah Winfrey’s The Color Purple.”

According to official records, Myers was born in 1935, although his birthday was mentioned on online sites as September 26, 1945. A source told TMZ that Myers altered his date of birth. The source added, “You know how actors are.”

An autopsy is arranged to determine the cause of his death. According to TMZ, Myers who served the Army will have military burial in West Virginia. He is survived by his son and 95-year-old mother.
