Beyoncé admits singing ‘with my prerecorded track’ at Obama’s inauguration

Via CNN

(CNN) — Yes, Beyoncé can sing — all by herself, thank you very much.

That much she showed Thursday, when she opened her appearance before reporters in New Orleans — where she’s set to headline the Super Bowl XLVII halftime performance Sunday — with a stirring, a cappella rendition of the national anthem.

It was the same tune she sang just over a week ago at the inauguration of President Barack Obama

But on that momentous occasion, Beyoncé admitted on Thursday, she had some help.

The world-renowned pop singer told reporters that “she decided to sing along with my prerecorded track,” a decision she made in part because she didn’t have time to rehearse with the U.S. Marine Band and had had “no proper sound check.”

“I did not feel comfortable taking a risk,” Beyoncé said of what she called “a very, very important, emotional show for me.” “I wanted to make (Obama) and the country proud.”

The admission about the January 21 performance wasn’t a complete shock.

A spokeswoman for the Marine Band initially said Beyoncé “was not actually singing” the national anthem. Hours later, the band backed away from the spokeswoman’s remarks, releasing a statement that said the group was not in a position to know for sure.

But that hardly stopped the speculation that one of America’s most famous contemporary singers had lip synced at one of the nation’s most important moments. Two days after the inauguration, an inaugural official who asked not to be identified said Beyoncé “did not sing live,” even though “she was spot on” in her prerecording, which was taped separately from the band and then married together.

The Houston native had been mum on the topic until she discussed the matter Thursday. Calling herself a perfectionist who will typically “practice until my feet bleed,” she conceded worrying about potential problems during “a live television show” taking place outside on a chilly Washington day.

Even with all the hubbub — and her insistence that “I always sing live,” with that exception — Beyoncé expressed no regrets about her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of the Capitol.

“I’m very proud of my performance,” she said.

The 31-year-old said the practice of performers singing along with prerecorded tracks is common in her industry.

Still, she promised she won’t be doing it Sunday during the Super Bowl halftime show.

“I will absolutely be singing live,” Beyoncé said. “This is what I was born to do.”

As to exactly what she’ll do, and with whom, she didn’t say much Thursday, dodging a question about whether she will be joined by her Destiny’s Child bandmates or her husband, critically acclaimed rapper Jay-Z. While Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson (the latter singing with the choir from Sandy Hook Elementary, the Connecticut school where 20 children were killed in December) also will perform, Knowles will command the stage once the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens break for halftime.

“I’m trying to learn to live every moment, because these moments are not promised to us,” she said of her excitement, recalling how she took off her shoes and ran the first time she set foot on the Superdome field. “This is such a huge opportunity.”

It’s also a huge challenge, including working on a stage that needs to be put together in just more than seven minutes, condensing her career into one 12-minute set, then performing in what is often any given year’s most watched program on television. Beyoncé admitted being nervous, but also said that after more than four months of preparation, she’s prepared.

“I’ve had a 16-year career, and all of the things that I’ve done have prepared me for this,” she said. “I’m ready.”

Well, I sent one to Oprah yesterday for her birthday. She strained her back picking it up. No joke! Feel better Oprah. Happy birthday. Sorry.”

Affection without Limitations: Rihanna and Chris Brown – Pop Culture

Our celebrity pic of the week goes to Rihanna and Chris Brown and features all the beauty, confusion and life lessons emitting unconditional love.

Affection without any limitations; true altruism and complete love — which is basically how Rihanna epitomizes her relationship with Brown. The pop star opened up about her on again off again romance with the hip hop star and says:

“I decided it was more important for me to be happy,” the pop star said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

“I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it,” the pop star said in reference to the 2009 assault on her by Brown.

“When you add up the pieces from the outside, it’s not the cutest puzzle in the world,” Rihanna adds. “You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it’s different now. We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that,” she continued.

And on the subject of Brown ever striking her again, Rihanna says:

“He doesn’t have the luxury of fucking up again. That’s just not an option. I can’t say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I’m pretty solid in the knowing that he’s disgusted by that. And I wouldn’t have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility. He made a mistake, and he’s paid his dues, he’s paid so much. And I know that’s not a place he would ever want to go back to. And sometimes people need support and encouragement, instead of ridicule and criticism and bashing,” the ‘Unapologetic’ singer adds.

Kind of reminds of  the famous quote by John F. Kennedy,”forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.”

The full interview was released today, January 31st and is now available on news stands as well as RollingStone.com.

As to be expected, Rick Ross releases rap about harrowing experience in recent drive by – “I can’t believe I’m alive”

When I think of gangsta rap, first thing that comes to mind is hip hop that reflects urban crime and the violent lifestyles of inner-city youths. The lyrical style has varied from accurate reflections to fictionalized accounts. Speaking of fictionalized accounts…well….just two days after rapper  Rick Ross  narrowly escaped death by drive by, the self proclaimed ‘BOSS’ is rapping about it.

On Monday Ross was reportedly targeted in a drive by shooting whereas a gunman opened fire on Ross‘s vehicle as he drove his Rolls-Royce in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The rapper apparently lost control of his car and crashed into an apartment building, according to police officials. There were no bullet holes in car and no one was injured, the gunmen/man is still at large.

“I can’t believe I’m alive,” he rapped about his near-death experience into a recording by rapper, Kendrick Lamar, titled B—- Don’t Kill my Vibe.

The track was released Monday, less than a day after the incident — talk about marketing…genius…eh ?

Well, I am happy to purport I am not the only skeptical hip hop lover that feels things sounds a little fishy with Ross’s story. Rapper 50 Cent, who might I add knows a little something; something about street violence, credibility, etc., having been shot nine times in a single incident, took to twitter to basically say that perhaps….just perhaps the crash was in fact a fake and part of a scheme by Ross to try and seem more gangster…thuggish like..?

Fiddy tweeted:

“Hahaha fat boy hit the building?lol it looks staged to me. No hole’s in da car,” attaching an Instagram pic of the car with zero bullet holes. He also added, “Nah they shot in the air then he drove into a building. Man they missed the whole f*cking car, where they do that at,” the rapper tweeted.

WPLG confirmed that no bullets hit Ross, his passenger or his car. Several boutiques and cafes lining Las Olas were not as lucky. Windows of storefronts were blown out on the north and south sides of the street.

“Yeah, bad shot,” veteran investigator Joe Matthews told WPLG.

“Freeway” Ricky Ross, a notorious Los Angeles drug kingpin also chimed in about the incident releasing a statement to HipHopDX.

“I’m not surprised that it happened given recent ongoings, when someone doesn’t understand the street rules they get confused and incidents like this can take place,” he said. “I’m still dealing with ongoing litigation about something as basic as using my name and identity, that should have been dealt with properly a long time ago. No ill will is wished upon anyone, but when you tell these stories about the streets you have to be careful.”

The actual 911 call has just been released my Florida officials. The call was made by an unidentified woman early Monday morning from a restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida … while the rapper was trying to speed away from the shooter in his Rolls-Royce.

“I just heard a bunch of gunshots go off … and a car sped by.”

The caller then interrupted the operator and said, “Oh my god, they’re turning around and coming back … I’m hanging up.”

When the operator tried to ask more questions about the situation — the caller shot back, “They’re coming back … I’m hiding.”

The caller then hangs up the phone.

Well it definitely appears his latest track may go gold after-all.
