Music News | Remembering Aaliyah 11 years later

It’s hard to believe eleven years has passed since the music industry lost “One in a Million” singer,  Aaliyah. So many years… and yet her  imprint hasn’t waned. Why is that? Many believe it’s the simple fact of her dieing so young.. at the height of career….and the ‘what if’s.’

On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah along with eight others were killed in a plane crash after filming the music video “Rock the Boat.” A devastating loss to the music industry.

Many fans and friends of the singer  have went to twitter and Facebook  in remembrance.

According to her friend Ivan Matias, Aaliyah” was a genuine, sweet, unpretentious spirit. Her warmth & infectious smile made those around her feel as if they’d known her forever. Maintaining a mystique that made her that much more intriguing,” Matias said. “When we’d go out, fans would swarm. She’d excuse herself, take pictures, never refuse an autograph, answer questions & without missing a beat; pick up where our conversation left off. She’d sometimes mention how beautiful a fan was or how moved she was by something they’d said.”

“She bought individuality and a unique thing that nobody else had,” said Brandy. “Her music was so forward, and before its time. You looked toward Aaliyah to do something new and fresh, that would just blow your mind. I miss her hard-knocking beats, with that pretty falsetto … and the lyrics were raw.”

In an interview earlier this year with the LA Times, Missy Elliott said, “the pain of her not being here” affects those close to her every day.

“I don’t wait until five years or 10 years to elaborate. I’m constantly talking about her,” Elliott said. “I still watch her videos and listen to her music. She’s a major part in our lives and in music.”

“She went out and she was on the top, there was nobody bigger than her. Aaliyah was in that place,” another associate said. “People have such an awesome, incredible catalog to listen to and videos to watch. Of course, we want more. But we won’t get to see new videos of her. All it’ll be is a memory of a sound from back then.”

  4. Tawanda says:

Some of us never get that privilege, and the fact that she accomplished so much so young is a true testament to that old adage; “Only the Good Die Young”. Rest in peace Aaliyah.

  5. Mark says:

She ran around on a stage half naked, and banged Jay Z, R Kelly, and Damon Dash, and experimented with the occult. She was no saint, but I still liked her.
