Last week, both Jennifer Lopez and Stephen Tyler exited the show. Many different artists were mentioned to be in the running as replacement judges. When Mariah Carey’s name came up, her hubby, Nick Cannon reportedly told TMZ that he wasn’t sure Idol had deep enough pockets. “I don’t know if they can afford Mariah Carey. That’s a lot of money.”

In 2010, Carey was rumored to become a judge but it fell through when Jennifer Lopez took the job. Again, American Idol seems to have landed another powerhouse performer bringing Mariah on set. MTV reports that in her final contract, Carey will earn more than $17 million for one season. It seems her hubby was right, Mariah costs quite a bit.

Word on who will be sitting next to Mariah Carey at the judges table is still very much up in the air. Everyone from Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry have been mentioned and Aretha Franklin has thrown her own name into the pot.
