Eight-time Grammy winner Lauryn Hill has pleaded guilty to willfully failing to file income tax returns with the IRS. Federal prosecutors contend she didn’t pay taxes on more than $1.5 million earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007 from recording and film royalties.

Hill declined to comment however, her attorney Nathan Hockman, said the star had been targeted by the federal government because of her celebrity status.

“There are many people in society who fail to file their taxes on time who only face civil liability,” Hockman told The Star-Ledger. “They chose Ms. Hill in particular because of who she was.”

Earlier this month, Hill responded to the charges:

“Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual,” Hill wrote. “I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.”

Lamar Odom traded to LA Clippers

Nine years after leaving the Los Angeles Clippers, Lamar Odom  is back — and will get a second chance to revitalize his career where he started.

Credit: Jeff Gross/Getty Sports ImagesThe Dallas Mavericks traded Odom on Friday in a four-team trade that included the Houston Rockets and the Utah Jazz, according to NBA.com. In exchange for Odom, the Clippers sent guard Mo Williams to the Jazz and the draft rights to second-round draft pick Furkan Aldemir to the Rockets.

 SportsMemorabilia.com

On April 9 the Mavericks said Odom would be inactive for the rest of the season, when the then-defending NBA champions still had nine regular season games left and were making their push toward the playoffs. That move came two days after a heated halftime exchange during a game between Odom and Dallas owner Mark Cuban, who questioned the player’s commitment to the team.

Odom’s averages of 6.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 20.5 minutes in Dallas were career lows. The 32-year-old Odom has averaged 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds in 879 career games.

The old Hollywood adage “Seven-Year Itch” still holds true. For both first, second and even third marriages, divorce seems inevitable and once thought to be fairy tale couple, Katie and Tom are no exceptions.

Yes, coming in as quite a shocker, the fairy tale romance has officially ended. On Thursday, five days before Tom Cruise’s 50th birthday, Katie Holmes, 33, filed divorce papers in New York, leaving Cruise and their fans searching for answers.

Cruise confirmed that it was Holmes who filed papers – not him – and the brief statement from his rep spoke of the star needing privacy to “work this out,” also noting that Cruise  is “deeply saddened.’ The Dawson Creek actress is claiming irreconcilable differences and is seeking “primary residential custody” of their 6 year old daughter, Suri, as well as a “suitable amount”of child support, according to TMZ.

Movie Maniac Review: ‘People Like Us’

By Greg Reifsteck

Twitter: @MovieManiacEOTM     facebook.com/eotmmoviemaniac

People Like Us is the heart and soul date movie of the Summer

Every summer people are looking for popcorn fare to escape their hectic lives.  I enjoy a good mindless action film as well, but for every super hero slugfest or cranked up action thriller I need a think piece as a palette cleanser.  I crave for a film that stretches my mind as well as satisfying my eyeballs.

This year’s surprise is People Like Us. It is one of those rare gems that studios for financial reasons shy away from making.  They would rather spend $150 million on special effects to make Megatron crap a CGI lightning bolt to make $300 million, instead of spending $20 million to possibly tell us a compelling or inspiring story.

People Like Us reminded me of last year’s hidden and underappreciated surprises Crazy Stupid Love and We Bought a Zoo in the way it also showed humanity for all of its brightness as well as its blemishes.  It is about real people dealing with real life problems, and taking them on with dignity and respect.  The characters in People Like Us don’t talk down to each other or at each other, as they do in many formulaic Hollywood dramas.  They aren’t preachy either.  They just have normal conversations that are food for thought.

Inspired by true events of its director Alex Kurtzman, the film stars Chris Pine as Sam, a twenty-something, slickster scam artist.  Sam’s latest “deal” collapses on the day he also learns that his father has passed away.   Sam lives a jet set lifestyle, and wants to run away from the reality of the situation.  But, he is called home against his wishes by his estranged mother Lillian (Michelle Pfeiffer).  We get a taste that his father lived the same wild lifestyle Sam has fallen into.  Fueled by drugs and alcohol, he was an old school music industry A & R guy that lived the Laurel Canyon life to its Wonderland fullest.

His father’s attorney Ike (Philip Baker Hall) meets with Sam to get the estate in order, and gives him a small bag of money. But the loot is not for him. The bag also contains a note saying he must deliver the money to a mystery address. Sam soon uncovers a startling secret that turns his entire world upside down: he has a 30-year-old sister Frankie whom he never knew about (Elizabeth Banks). As their relationship develops and deepens, Sam is forced to slow down and look life straight on instead of just the corner of his eye.  He also has a misunderstood nephew Josh (Michael Hall D’Addario) that does some early-teen acting out by placing a homemade bomb in his school pool.

This film is obviously a labor of love to first-time director (but veteran writer) Kurtzman, and thank goodness Spielberg saw the potential in the story to let him make it over at DreamWorks.  The budget of the whole film probably cost the same as 15 minutes of one of the Kurtzman usual special effects fests. It was brave of him to try and tread in unfamiliar waters, and he should be commended for succeeding with a movie that tugs at the heart and soul.

Pine shows real chops in drama, and should continue down that path.  We knew he had it in him playing a young James T. Kirk in the Kurtzman-penned Star Trek reboot.  He gives his character real depth and makes us believe in both sides of Sam; the one that can’t stop lying to sell anything to anyone and the one that realizes the truth will set him free.

I must digress, I have what I call my movie girlfriends; actresses I know I don’t have a chance with in reality, but will watch them in any film they star in because I have massive crushes on them.  Sandra Bullock is my ultimate movie girlfriend, such brains, beauty and balls.  I even suffered through Premonition and Miss Congeniality 2 to watch her at work for goodness sake. Emma Stone is another one thanks to Zombieland, Easy A and Crazy Stupid Love. You get the picture.

So my latest cinematic babe that can hold her own is Elizabeth Banks, who plays Frankie in People Like Us.  She first caught my eye as a football wife in Invincible, but really got me going in Zach and Miri Make a Porno. She gives it her all as Frankie in People Like Us.  She makes Frankie many dimensions of emotion, and a very old soul.  The chemistry between Pine and her is charming and palpable.

The other huge discovery in this film is D’Addario.  He has the same look in his eye Patrick Fugit had an impressionable young rock journalist in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. He spews his little philosophies on life with venom, but you know deep down inside he is going to be a heartbreaker.  D’Addario gives his character an innocence that you know won’t last very long once he puts all of the pieces together.  And you root for that day to come along with him, because in his small acting nuances D’Addario gives him potential.

Please give this film a chance this weekend if you are not in for the rude and crude Ted or the Chippendale’s kitsch of Magic Mike. If you want to impress your first date, or are trying to resuscitate a relationship, take them to see this movie. If the tenderheartedness of People Like Us doesn’t get things swooning then nothing will.

Customs officials decline to confirm the report, saying only that an American artist entered Norway with a small amount of marijuana that was detected by a sniffer-dog. Norwegian law prevents law enforcement officials from naming suspects.

According to the Associate Press a customs officer said Thursday that the artist was also carrying more cash than is legally allowed and was subsequently fined 52,000 kroner ($8,600) for the violations.

Snoop Dogg was scheduled to perform Thursday at a musical festival in the southern town of Kristiansand.

Curry out as co-host of NBC’s ‘Today’ show

Published by EOTM News Editor on June 28th, 2012 - in Breaking News, Entertainment News

NEW YORK (AP) — Ann Curry offered a tearful goodbye as co-host of NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday, saying, “This is not as I expected to ever leave this couch.”

Her exit represents NBC’s most visible response to the popular morning show’s worst stretch in the ratings in nearly two decades. “Today” hadn’t lost a single week since 1996, but this spring it was beaten four times by ABC’s resurgent “Good Morning America.”

Curry’s exit marked a stark contrast to the lengthy tribute shows given to predecessors Meredith Vieira and Katie Couric. She announced it during the final five minutes of her shift, ending a week of awkward television as she continued working after word spread that NBC was looking to oust her.

“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line but, man, I did try,” she said, breaking down.

Curry joined the show as a news anchor in 1997. Passed over for the co-host job when Vieira replaced Couric, she was given the chance when Vieira left last June. But her pairing with co-host Matt Lauer never seemed to click and she took the fall for the show’s ratings troubles.

NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, who co-hosts the 9 a.m. segment of the show, is expected to replace Curry.

Curry will remain at NBC News, saying she’s been given a “fancy new title” to lead a reporting team. NBC said she will be anchor-at-large and national and international correspondent. Her work will occasionally resurface on “Today,” and Lauer said she will be in London with the show for the Olympics.

He sat next to Curry, Al Roker and Natalie Morales on the couch as Curry choked back tears and apologized for being a “sob sister.”

“It’s not goodbye, not by a long shot,” a grim-faced Lauer said.

Each of her colleagues recalled some of Curry’s reporting from her “Today” tenure, but there was no video tribute. The “Today” website displayed “15 top Ann moments spanning her 15 years on TV,” asking viewers to vote on their favorite.

“To all of you watching, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours,” she said.

She then posted: “Fire in da telly #evacuationlife”, with a snapshot of a fire engine outside the hotel.

London Fire Brigade have confirmed that no one was injured, and Clare Durnford, the hotel’s public relations manager insisted the incident was not serious, and evacuation was just a safety precaution.

“At approximately 06:30, one of the service elevator motors at Corinthia Hotel London burnt out. There was a slight discharge of smoke and because of our robust fire management policy, the alarms were activated and a full evacuation of the building was carried out.

“As a matter of procedure, the fire brigade were called to carry out full safety checks throughout the building. All guests were safely accounted for and were allowed back into the hotel soon after 7am.”

Rihanna is in London headlining for Radio One’s Hackney Weekend at Wireless Festival in Hyde Park.

Curry is reportedly getting at least $10 million to leave “Today,” the nation’s No. 1 morning show — an from the looks of it she’s ‘Okay to Go.’

The New York Daily News calls a potential Gifford-Philibin reunion a “bad idea” but notes that the reunion may be the only way to divert audiences’ attention away from the uncomfortable dismissal of Curry while a replacement is being named.

Curry has said nothing about the gossip and NBC has not made any official comments. A call to her representative, Washington lawyer Robert Barnett, was not returned.

Earlier this year, “Today” show executive producer Jim Bell offered Curry a tepid endorsement, telling Show Tracker the network had “no plans” to replace her.
